Exhaust piping question

I bought my C63 about 4 months ago. The previous owner did a secondary cat and resonator delete. He replaced them with 2 straight pipes that are noticeably larger than the stock piping. So it looks like it goes from 2.5 inch piping to 3 inch piping, then back to 2.5 inch piping. My question is, does that affect the cars performance? Would I be better off going to an exhaust shop and getting the piping the same diameter all the way through?

Makes no measurable difference. Unless you like blowing money, leave it as is.

I would fix it thou.
I´ve seen big losses on other engines due to mixing pipeareas.

No. His piping is fine. If it was 3” pipe off the manifolds down to 2.5”, then agree that’s no good. But a 3” middle section between existing sections of 2.5” makes absolutely zero difference.

Blah blah blah..
I´d say it´s not.
I´ve been tuning cars for about 35 years now, seen losses before as i said.
And Mercedes M156 isn´t unique, it´s just an ottomotor, as all else i´ve been tuning.

If going up in area and down again creates backpressure, this because the bigger area looses speed of gasses and by that makes more pressure.
The exhaustpulses running in to this 'highpressure' area will create higher pressure upstreams against the engine, and with that less performance due to pumpinglosses increase and eventual extractingeffect in overlap period get less force doing it´s thing.

IF one would want to make area alternations you would NEVER want to decrease the area after one had been going up.
There are some people saying that the exhaust is colder and needs less area the further back you get on the exhaust system, that´s just humbug.
I lost about 100hp in an 4cyl turboengine in doing that.(723hp from the beginning)

I decided to get the piping redone and it only cost me $100. Initially, I had 2 straight pipes that replaced the secondary cats and resonator. I decided to put in a x-pipe. The muffler shop installed the x-pipe directly above the support bar that goes across the bottom of the car. My question is, doesn’t the x-pipe need to be a little farther up toward the primary cats? Does it make a difference where I have it now? Here is a picture. Sorry, it’s upside down, but I think you get the point. Thank you.

only bad part is it's aluminized piping and will end up rusting over time, but that's what all the generic muffler shops use. Finally some decent welds though!!!! Everyone of these deletes i see usually make my eyes bleed, between press bent cheap piping, leaks, rust and horrible welds. They did a good job on yours!

The weird thing is my car sounds like a 350z or a G35 now. Hollow exhaust tone that is lower in volume. I’ve already talked to the muffler shop and I’m going back next week to get rid of the x pipe. Going back to straight pipes with the secondary cats and resonator.

So you’re going complete straight pipe with no crossover? I did that before and it sounded like ****

I bought the car 4 months ago and the previous owner put straight pipes on it. But for some reason that section had 3 inch piping. Honestly, I prefer the straight pipe sound than the hollow tone that it has right now.

Put the resonator back in and go straight pipe instead of secondary cat. The resonator gives you the AMG grunt,

Now that I have the X pipe/straight pipe combo and from watching tons of other videos on different combinations, I honestly prefer the straight pipe from the secondary cats to the resonator. I kinda like how crazy it sounds. That’s why I’m going back to it. Also, I didn’t feel any power difference between the 2 set ups.

Thats what I figured. You were not going to feel any power difference swapping out those pipes. You know what did feel it? Your wallet. Least it was cheap enough.

After driving it for another day, the throttle response is slightly quicker with the x pipe, but after 3k rpm, it’s the same. It could just be my car, but the x pipe is too tame for me. I needed to switch out the old straight pipes the previous owner put on anyway. It looked pretty rusted and the diameter wasn’t the same as OEM.

I´ve got an special x-pipe on mine, as i wanted to get rid of the AMG growl, i got two y-pipes with a resonator between them.
This combined with cks headers 100cell cats, and 3" piping all the way, and the xpipe has a lite bit of a venturi as it is some squaremillimetres smaller, 300mm long, then back up to two 3" flowmaster FX mufflers and special end tips(big ovals like CK63RS), custom made by me, by the way, whole system without heaers is custom by me.
This has created a deep rumble growl thing, like amg rumble but way deeper, and at high revs it screams together with that growl combined.

A little bit of failure, but i have learned to like it due to it is a special sound like almost no one else.
