CA Dealership Refused to Sell me a Vehicle

I reached out to this dealership in SoCal inquiring about a C63 I am interested in. As soon as they realized I lived out of state, the salesman flat out said we do not sell cars to out of state buyers and that I had to be there in person to do the paperwork if I wanted it. The reason he provided was that they have been burned way too many times by buyers returning vehicles and his dealership was obligated to cover cost of transport back to CA. I suggested I was willing to wave my right to return or would cover transport but they still refused.

Has anyone experienced something like this? And Is this even legal?

this is normal for private car dealerships. in regards to used cars i guess it makes sense as this is similar for new cars as well. the only way to get around this is to get your local new car dealer to trade or purchase the vehicle from the out of state dealership which cuts into their profits drastically, then process the sale locally. car dealerships private or branded dealerships are privately owned so their practices can vary.

I bought my C63 in 2014 from a MB dealer in SoCal while I lived in NYC. They took a deposit and held it for me, I then flew out to complete the paperwork and drove it back. You may consider offering to do the same if you want the car.

Sigh... Yeah I'm tempted to do just do that.

I was just trying to avoid airports and the plane due to covid.

Called my local MB dealership, see if they could help. They said dealership that’s selling the C63 isn’t an autonation dealer for them to be able to move it.

Anyway, seems like my options are either pass on the car or fly out to LA.

Decisions decisions...

Not worth risking Covid just to see a damn car. Could always get a rental car and drive down? Not saying it will be fun, but at least you won't have the potential of dying.

you watch too much news. Fly out check it out if you love it. Where a mask wash your hands you’ll be fine as long as you don’t have underlying health issues or are elderly. If you are well maybe rethink it.

I have been trying to buy another car to add to my collection and have now failed to purchase in Kansas and Texas... Dealers are definitely more squirrelly since the pandemic...
