Transmission Rebuild
#126
nice work jim! you probably already know this, before you start up the car be sure to unbolt the side cooler and bleed out all of the air with the top return line at its highest point before bolting it back on. your car is becoming more and more of a beast every day!

Thanks Barry! So this guy is going to be on its own cooling circuit, plumbed into the aux AN ports on the Weistec trans pan. I’m probably not going to go that far in the actual hookup, now that I think about it, as the car has to go back in the shop to inspect the trans again. So I’m thinking that I’m just going to do everything except the fluid lines to the cooler because the trans is going to be completely drained again anyway and they might as well hook it all up on reassembly. Besides they used a local shop to make the diff cooler lines, and they did a really nice job, so I wouldn’t mind having everything match.

2 pieces of good news today. I had to get off my *** and at least get my car running again because it turns out we’re moving in a week. So I went over the car super carefully and figured out a couple things.
1. I was right. Taking all that junk out gave me just enough room to snake a Dremel cutting wheel in there CAREFULLY to cut up the SAI pipe and take it out without removing the PS pump, which will have to be replaced another time. Sweet.
2. Think I found the source of my electrical problem. Found what was left of my rear brake pad sensor dangling below the car and totally shredded. The only thing I can think of is that this was shorting out intermittently as it hit metal while swinging around. At some point it became damaged enough that it allowed me to get home. I think. Everything else looks good. New alternator will go in anyway when I get around to it.
Changed coolant and hoses, removed all the SAI valves and pipes, new V belt and tensioner, fixed a bunch of banged up underbody panels, and a ton of other little things like cleaning up wiring etc. Appears that I forgot to plug in the “Speed-Sensitive Power Steering Solenoid Valve” when I put her back together - will have to figure out where that is exactly, hope it’s not one of the plugs I clipped. Anyway, projects will get back underway once we’re settled in the new house and I get past the back injury that’s hobbled me for the past couple of months…
EDIT: Car sounds great - started right up with zero tick after sitting for almost 5 months. SAI removal appears to have been successful. Coolant looks good, settled around 190F at idle with the distilled water and Waterwetter mix. The power steering speed sensor apparently lightens steering below 10mph. Not a big deal, it’s a bit of a workout but I’ll figure out where the plug goes next week.

Jim, what did it cost to rebuild the entire transmission? Did you have to change the converter and pump as well or they just rebuilt the tranny? I don’t race my 2010 but now have over 131k miles…all original trans…no rebuild. Feels sluggish, does the slip when cold in 7th and confused shifts slow downhill drives. I am also getting a pretty loud wine too now that doesn’t go away..not the belts.
I don’t have the MCT version of the 722.9…any idea which exedy upgraded version would be for mine? I went to the exedy site and didn’t see any for a c63. My look at Raybestos to upgrade but they have 722.9 then 01 and 02 versions so not sure which one again.
thanks for input and details. Hope the car is driving well now after the break In.

Im in the same boat as you with my 2011. Have a look at the kit from southern hot rod. Also, a forum/facebook group member Eric is offering a kit for sale as well. Might be worth following up.

Southern hot rods unit looks good. And you don't have to worry about getting it rebuild or finding someone to do the rebuild it's all done just drop it in and go.

Thanks will check it out…the clutches from Raybestos GPZ are around $700, gaskets and o-ring kit around $100, total parts maybe under $1500 total. The trans oil pump and converter are fairly expensive if they are to be replaced…think my whine is from the oil pump within the unit. The full SHR kit might be a bit overkill for my daily application but would be nice to have those clutches for longevity purposes.

Yes I did see that and could be worth it too but not sure what shipping costs and downtime would be to do that. If they were local it would make it easier but can’t sit out without a car for a long period. There is also the TCU which I may need to clean and refresh as well due to shifting issues. I am not sure if they do that too. I’ll pop them an email to inquire. It’s possible cost could be a bit cheaper to do an SHR vs CA repair pricing but the downtime could be the drawback. If they had a core exchange it would be better but unfortunately it seems they work on your specific unit only. I’ll send them an email.

Thankfully ive found a local company who has experience rebuilding the 722.9 transmission with stock/oem parts who is willing to take the punt on rebuilding it with aftermarket parts. $3k to pull and re install the trans, and $120/hr in labour to do the rebuild.

Am sure…that sounds like a good plan…I may do the same. I have reached out to SHR today to check on those items I was concerned about like shipping and downtime. Will see what they say. For my application, maybe just a decent set of new clutches and be done with it. Main concerns is the whirring sound I am getting right now which could be the trans oil pump gear. We have another gentleman on this board who is from Australia…maybe touch base with him as he knows a bunch of tuners out there and currently has one of the fastest w204s there. Mr747

Getting closer. I heard her run yesterday. ❤️
DYME is currently fabricating the 8AN lines. Everything is mounted and we have a 180F thermal switch. Electrical gremlins solved. New alternator and heat shield for it. Suspension completely dialed in and corner balanced. Liberty Walk bumper is getting sprayed this week, then clear film 2 weeks after that. Pretty close now…

Getting closer every day… I’m really glad I didn’t tackle this part, it wouldn’t have turned out nearly as clean. Custom DYME hoses and fittings, thermal wrapped. A+ attention to detail here.

I'm curious how the fluid change procedure will work now.
I'm guessing, dump the pan then run the external pump to evac the cooler and lines. Fill the pan to capacity and run the external pump again while simultaneously adding more fluid to the pan. Once the external lines and cooler are primed do the normal fluid level procedure.

Thought I'd post the results of my alignment. Keep in mind that I had this car on track at Big Willow in Feb 2021 with the "before" specs. Oops. I was wondering why the car was a handful and not really doing what I thought it should. Look at that positive front toe holy crap! Scary.

I only ran it up in the canyons and at Big Willow for a few weeks after my big COVID push to gut the car and fix the control arms etc. After my disaster track day I started tearing it apart again and it hasn’t seen any miles since. I guess you can’t just tear out adjustable control arms and replace with different arms and expect everything to be hunky dory. Knew I forgot something lol.
