The difference between 229.5 & 229.51
The only difference between the 229.5 & 229.51 is that the 229.51 has additional additives meant to be used in a Diesel engines.
If you really want to get the maximum number for miles out of your engine at the start of November change the engine oil to 5W-30 and then on May 1st change it again to 5W-40 assuming the engine is a gasoline engine just make sure both oils are of the 229.5 grade and you’ve done everything you can to lengthen the life of your engine. As we all know the greatest amount of engine wear takes place in the first minute or two that you start a cold engine and during the Winter if you’re running 5W-40, 5W-30 makes the process a little easier on the engine for those that want to do the best for the engine they can. The worst thing you can do to your engine is overfill the engine oil sump. I’d rather run my engine that is 1litre low on oil then 1 litre too much oil, check your oil once a month. Good luck.

Are you a certified MB mechanic?
All Knowing One, tell us what’s wrong with my advice. This person obviously wants his car to last a very long time. So with all of your alleged mechanical knowledge explain the exact nature of the Uneducated Advice, or better still where in your dreams did you come upon your mechanical knowledge and high school shop class doesn’t count!

It’s terrible advice
The engines requirements are for a 40 weight oil. A 0 or 5w40 is going to flow as close as makes no difference as a 0-5w30 but without the wear protection or clearance specification for drain back and flow that the engine was designed for. Yes it will probably be fine and nothing will be negatively affect but it may and it’s not worth the ~$200 to just change it and know you have the proper oil

There is a reason they suggest higher viscosity oil for the m156 the flow of a 40w with the same quality of base stock and similar additive package will be different than a 30w.
Also diesel oils often include higher quantities of the AW package in the form of zddp which can cause damage to your cats if you still have them in your car

Why would you want to change the oils operating temp viscosity according to the season? Would it make more sense to change the cold temp viscosity according to the season?
FYI
The number before the W is the cold temp viscosity and the number after the operating temp viscosity.

Dont go to the dealer to do oil changes they use Mobil1. Mobil1 is good for non amg car always look for good oil like Redline or motul or Liquimoly not dealership snake oil. Remember dealers wants your car no too long last too long that way when shi* comes down they want you to trade your old car.

It would be in their interest to keep a car on the road as long as they can.

Who told you this? There's several UOAs on both the 0W40 and 5W40 blend proving otherwise. Yes there are better oils, but the Mobil1 option is still suitable for this platform.

But are a 5W30 and 5W40 the same viscosity when cold and warming up ?
No they are not.......!

Weistec engineers told me that when I was buying transmission pan and catch can, couple local tuners here in my area and Jerry from eurocharged also told me ones few years ago When I was having a conversation with him never to use Mobil1 unless budget is an issue. Bottom mind is the w204 c63 are racing engines. Treat it like one. At the end of your day is your car your vehicle, your investments. I take care of my investment with nothing but the best. If you want to treat your investment like a toyota Corolla is your choise. I just gave my opinion
