Hi!

Just got my dream car 5 days ago, a 2013 c63 amg with pp, lsd and only ~60.000km.

Took it home from a A 505 service from MB yesterday. Drove it hard all day and night and was in love.
Today i looked at the service papers just for fun, and i noticed the service i did yesterday said this:
Oil 5w-30
Quality: 299.51

What... the...? Shouldnt it be 0-40 or 5-40? And shouldnt it be 229.5?

Im in chock. My dream car which I plan to keep until the day I cant drive anymore, and now there is 8 liters of wrong oil?
Am I missing something?

Oh and also, 2 days after i bought it i got rear ended in a roundabout. Never been hit before in 14 years of driving.

Relax. Your car isn’t going to explode. Just put the right oil in it. Or call the dealer and tell them what you think, hopefully they take the car back in and do it correctly without adding a handful of sand out of spite. It’s gonna be ok.

Thanks for the fast answer, its hard to relax when the biggest dealer/reseller MB in my country fudge something this easy up. But ill try, thanks.

Oh, I will tell them what I think I will also tell them im going to watch the whole process when they change the oil again.

I have googled wrong oil in these cars and thats why im scared. Everywhere its like "Drive slooooow in C to the nearest dealer, DONT rev over 3k" ... so its hard to relax

The internet is full of garbage. Even if you left the oil in until the next scheduled change, it’s unlikely to cause any harm whatsoever. Just get it changed out and move on.

All right, that actually made me cool down a bit, appreciated. One thing though, since the camshaft and adjusters are so prone to damage in these engines, and oil seems to make a difference, wouldnt this stress my cams even more? If i would wait 5000km for next change thats 5000km of cams not getting proper lubed?

Im a bit new to this lovely beast of an engine, and my plan is to keep the car for years and years. What would you recommend I do? Besides oil change inbetween services. Is it wise to open it up and check for wear or should I just take good care of it and pray I wont hear the dreadfull ticking noice on cold start in the future?

Also is it wise to fill up oil from time to time, keep it full, then at 5000km change it all, repeat, service, repeat?

Any other things i could do to keep them "safe"? I wont drive it like a granny though, so thats out of question haha...

I am with Blk on this just change it won't hurt anything unless you run it for like 50k miles or are doing track days on it, just get some 5w-40 in the beast and enjoy it!

Thanks guys and gals for your input, i was in a bit of panic mode as some of you figured, lol.

I was at the dealer just now, told them everything and it was actually a typo. They had typed a code that showed 299.51 and 5w-30. When she talked to the mechanics they noticed that. They have now changed the code in the digital format and it shows the correct oil now: 229.5, 0w-40. Yay! They apologized and solved it very professional.

On my way back an old grandpa in his cooper S passed me on the inside lane at about 190km/h. I didnt know people took my car as an insult, lol.

I was under the impression that .51 was just the latest and greatest. Usually if a fluid in not backwards compatible it will be obvious in the FSM and ON the bottle.

They told me that .51 is just a code for 5w-30, and .5 is 0w-40. So the typo was actually the .51 that made it state 5w-30. But when changed to .5 it changed the oil to 0-40. Thats what I got from them anyway.
When I think about it, I really hope it was just a typo as she said, and not something they just said to save their skin. The nice lady who was in manage of the service protocol that day was under a lot of stress, and therefore the typo, according to MB.

Edit: To make it clearer, MB code is 299.5 for the 229.5 oil 0w-40, and 299.51 is the code for 229.5 5w-30

I would consider changing to 5w40 on your next oil change. With 5w oil, the tappets (hydraulic lifters) aren't draining as fast as with 0w when the car is sitting and prevent the famous tappet knock on start up's.
It was more of an issue with engines before the tappet change. Your car has the updated tappets but it wouldn't hurt to go to 5w.

That's incorrect. Both 229.5 and 229.51 cover 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 & 5W-40.

229.51 is a Low SPAsh variant of 229.5 so they still could have put an incorrect 5W-30 in.

Jasonoff; Im not talking about the 229.5 or 229.51 quality, im talking about mercedes own codes. 299.5 stands for 229.5 0w-40 and 299.51 stands for 229.5 5w-30

So when the lady typed in MB code "299.51" their system automaticly put out "229.5 5w-30" in the service sheet. But that was a typo according to them.
So when they typed in "299.5" the system automaticly put in "229.5 0-40" in the service sheet

What do you mean "Mercedes own codes"? Are you talking about what that specific dealership prints out on a service record sheet?

Because https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html does not mean it will be 0W40 and https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.51_en.html does not mean it will be 5W30

It sounds like they're not actually sure what they put in.

Ohhh... Thanks for the explination. Now I feel they BS me? That they put in wrong oil and tried to make it seem legit?

Would it help if i take pictures of the papers and post here, and maybe you can help me with that? I think they kept the "old" prints... And now I have the "correct" but I will look

None of that will help. Just change the oil.

Dealerships suck and ill bet even if they put the wrong oil in they won't eat a free oil change and just tell you they printed the wrong code on the service slip.

Buy a mitivac and suck the oil out yourself and put some 5w40 in there.

I've had 3 people at dealership tell me coolant smell is normal on my c63s and I'm sitting there arguing with the sales guys and owner and demanding a master tech come out.

First thing tech says that smell is not normal. should of seen the look at the 2 service guys and owner/manager.

coolant was over filed and not bleed correctly with the separate heat exchangers on the bi turbo setup.

people forget to realize...dealers although are branded...are all privately owned.

meaning just like any private mom and pop repair shop, we have good ones and we have bad ones. the only difference is they have a parts department attached, do warranty service (could be good or bad as well), and can contact headquarters directly if they are unable to solve an issue.

i've owned my E63 for 5-7 years now and i've only brought my car to the dealer once, and that was for the fuel tank recall. every other shop has been a friends shop or shop that allowed me to watch them work like a hawk. lol

I see... So even if its a Mercedes-benz only shop, like HUGE facilitys and everyone is running around with MB branded suits etc, its just like another mom and pop shop except that they have backup from the headquarters in Germany?
This is why I always have done my own services on my old cars, but they where out of warranty and i could do it all by myself without the paranoia. It have worked fine. But this is still in warranty so I need to service it at a shop to keep my warranty.

When you say buy a mitivac and suck the oil out, is that so I dont need to change filter and plug? Because I can do a oil change, but filter and plugs do cost... But is it more expensive than mitivac? Or any other benefits?

I am royaly pissed that they did this mistake. But I do appreciate all of you guys helping me out. I wouldnt be able to sleep until monday if it wasnt for this forum, lol.

I will try to contact them monday, tell them im not satisfied with the answer after research and demanding new oil and that I will watch when they do it. If they say no, I bite the sour apple and just buy the 8L (extremly expensive) oil myself and call it a day. And on my next service I will be there and watch every step.

Edit: I just figured something, its a longshot and I should google it but as with google answers I dont know if it will help. My question, can I suck out a portion of the oil and, somehow, see what sort it is? Like if it really is 0-40? If so, i could bust their ***** real good for lying

Ill post it anyway just incase someone finds anything interesting. The first picture is the same as I got when it was "wrong" , that page stayed, since it was nothing wrong in it they said. And the second picture is the new "digital service paper".

The old one stated at "Viskositet 5w-30" and "oljekvalite" 299.51" <---- Which they claim is NOT the 229.5, but a "code" they type so the computer automaticly put in the rest.

The new one as you can see below, second picture, is now saying "0w-40" and "299.5" <--- Also a code which they say they type in to get "0-40"

I think im being tricked... but oh well, worth a shot posting it. Anyway, I will still change the oil.

*edit* Just looked at the old service papers from previous owner where he had service it at the exact same place, and even on the digital paper, my second one with "code" it is stated "229.5"
So yea... they just lied right up my face... Nice

229.5 is 0W40 or 5W40 but in the US the dealer stopped putting in 0W and all typically do 5W due to lifter bleed down with 0W.

Assuming you mean specific to the M156 but 229.5 also covers 30WT depending on the application.
