Wheel Studs

Howdy Fellas,

Would anyone happen to have a link handy to a good wheel stud conversion kit?
My standard wheel bolts have seen better days and are looking a bit stretched.

I just got a set of 81mm studs from these boys. No complaints. They were the only rounded bullet nosed style I could find after Rennline changed suppliers

Whatever you do, don’t get studs from unknown or fly-by-night operations. They’re too important and there are too many horror stories. Go with a brand/distributor that is known, heavily reviewed and trusted only. ARP, MSI and Motorsports Hardware are a few known manufacturers that use the right metal and hardness and aren’t likely to snap and lead to catastrophe.

I like and use Motorsports Hardware myself.

I can't recommend motorsports hardware enough. They were super responsive to email for all my questions and easy to install. If you get them, here's a note from Ryan over there: "If they are the silver studs, then yes, they are 7/32nds and I would torque those to hand tight rather than 25ftlbs since there is no pronounced shoulder for the stud to bottom out on. As with the other studs, please ensure you use blue/medium thread locker when mounting the studs."

Oh yeah, one other thing. I change my studs every 3 years to be extra safe. Even quality studs can get fatigued though all the heat cycles and stresses they go through. Cheap insurance IMO.

I have had the racing brake studs on my car for 2 years now and I really like them. They are to be torqued and lock tighted and they offer 2 lug nut choices ball seat or conical seat. Pricing is decent I think.

Only thing about racing brake is their customer service isn't the greatest. They sent me the wrong lug nuts and I tried to email them twice about it and got one generic response and no response the 2nd time. But I will say they do make some very good products though.

I originally thought the RB kit was a decent price before I realized it's per axle.

Any issue with RB studs you showed being M12x1.5 while the Motorsports studs and others shown are M14x1.5?
RB m12x1.5 show Ball seat lug nuts in the pic but their mercedes m14x1.5 say cone seat which wouldn't work with stock c63 wheels

I had the RB studs originally. They rusted like crazy and the hex heads stripped easily.

Anyone with the Motorsports Hardware studs have to shave off some on the rears so they wouldn't interfere with the ebrake?

Nope, I did not have to shave the rears or do any modifications. This is the exact order I bought, you may or may not need the lug nuts, depending on if you are using stock wheels or aftermarket wheels. I went with 64mm because I wanted the option to use 15mm spacers, but you don't need it if you don't think you'll need spacers.

22 x 64mm 14x1.5 studs (2 extra for backup)
17 x R14 black nuts (2 extra for backup, will use 5 lock nuts)
5 x R14 black conical tuner lock nuts
5 x R14 conical to ball adapter

I'd email them to piece together exactly a kit that you want/need, Ryan was super responsive.

I got the 82mm bullet nose as I am looking to run spacers, but after install I noticed a ticking sound when I drove at low speed. I took the studs out of the rear and the sound went away. It may have something to do with my emergency brake itself as its not working properly at the moment. Just wanted to see if anyone else had to do a bit of shaving to get them installed properly before I go digging.

Even without running spacers the stud kit looks really good IMO. And it makes changing wheels so much easier.

Stud is extending too much into the hub... a little shaving is required.

my studs are 14x1.5 idk why it's stating 12x1.5. I'm happy with mine so far but it seems like there is plenty of options out there.

I did this with Otis Inc LA parts last week. The rears ended up being too long, making contact with the parking brake assembly. I ended up getting a few of them seized up due to a combo of threadlocker (PLEASE be sure to use blue - nothing stronger) and likely too much torque. Phil at Otis says they always recommend torqueing the studs to factory wheel bolt spec, but I do think that's much too high considering that both RB and MSH recommend a lower number.

I've got MSH studs coming in this week to try again. Fwiw, the MSH studs with the shoulder have about 12mm of thread on the hub side whereas the Otis studs were about 15mm. I'll report back once it's done, but I'd imagine that's plenty of clearance for the parking brake.

I don't see an m14x1.5 with ball seat nuts on their website, do you have factory wheels that use ball seats?

yes, I use my factory wheels or my weld drag wheel. But the welds are conical seat.

I just saw, yea idk why they only offer the conical seat now. I did however buy black steel ball seat lug nuts off ebay and they work great. It adds to the cost but I'd call them to see if they offer them, but they did screw my order a couple years ago so who knows..

But if needed search 14x1.5 ball seat on ebay should be able to pick up a set for 25 bucks or so.

In case anyone is curious, the Motorsports Hardware studs worked perfectly in the rear. I measured them compared to the Otis Inc LA studs and they're about 2mm shorter on the hub side. MSH also includes printed instructions with their studs. For the black "race" studs, they recommend blue threadlocker and 25 lb/ft. Nuts torqued to factory spec (96 lb/ft).

Would anyone happen to know which kit I'd need on stock wheels with no spacers?

Also, whats the opinion on spacers? Yay or nay with stock wheels and suspension? I wouldn't mind a bit more of an aggressive look, but not at the expense of rubbing/crap driving dynamics or looking aids
