Upper Oil Pan Gasket

Hello everyone, looks like my upper oil pan is leaking. Not anything crazy but enough for it to be noticed during maintenance but no lights.

From what I can tell on this forum its a common enough issue and the parts aren't the cost issue but the labor.

All I've really managed to find is "This is a pain in the *** to take care of." in more or less words. The MB mechanic who seems to be doing the work on my car as of late essentially said unless I'm having large pools and low/check oil lights I should be okay.

Really just got a couple questions.

1. I was quoted 15 hours of labor, this seems in line with everyone's discontent on the forum with having to combat this issue. I cant really find a write-up/information on this issue like other common problems on this forum, is this something possible to do in a garage by yourself? From some posts it seems as though the engine needs to be lifted out of the car or something along these lines?

2. In the mean time, should any sense of spirited driving be eliminated? I plan on solving the issue at some point in the future but I want to know if I will/could cause further damage, I would imagine if its low on oil of course but if its only leaking slowly and refilled if low the car would be all right?

Any knowledgeable advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

There are 2 lower oil pans, one middle pan and then the bed plate. Most of these engines have slight seepage at the bedplate, on the right rear corner / by the starter. The bedplate is a major repair job.

Weird, I didn't have any problems downloading and setting up. OK it was several years ago, so don't know how it goes today

Thanks, yeah I'll see what my options are when I get around to this.

I originally wanted to do the headers myself but if the motor is out of the car anyway I may as well see if my dealer will just swap the manifolds for headers while its out.

I had mine done a few weeks ago. Total cost, labor, parts, and they replaced the motor mounts too since the engine has to be lifted to do the upper pan, was $3400 at my local MB dealership. I believe the repair estimate said 17 hours worth of labor.

That actually sounds like not a bad deal, it is a huge job to do the upper pan, 17 hours is about right and your total cost wasn't too bad.

They must have supported the motor from the top and dropped the subframe for access.

Beats me. I just know it was a huge ruckus and they offered to do the motor mounts while they were in there. 56k miles so I said why not.

Yeah, I'm not upset about it. They've treated me well over there, so I'm more than happy to have them do the work.

So looks like this is the sealing process at the factory.

found a solution. i'm using a google chrome download assistant. it combines multiple download streams to accelerate the download. previously it would show 6 hours and after about 45 minutes the download would fail. using the download tool which is seamless, it should be done in 20 minutes of which a 20.4gb file.
