Is the auxiliary oil cooler really needed?

Hi, just wondering how effective the oil cooler inside the wheel arch is effective for just general driving, seems the car also has the front mount oil cooler installed.

My one in the wheel was damaged and leaked, I refused to pay Mercedes the £1100 paid quoted and the wait to get it in., so I adapted the oil lines into a universal same size an10 oil cooler from ebay.

Working fine, but I did think about just joining the two pipes together and do away with the whole thing.

Car is never tracked and is 2008 model

Yeah totally unnecessary. AMG don’t have any idea what they’re doing, just get rid of oil cooling altogether. Oil comes from the middle of the planet where it’s hot anyway, it likes it.

Driving slow, just doing a 1st and 2nd pull with some pauses between.
Yes it will work........
But...

Well after some driving and some hard and normal driving all seems to be good, the oil temp peaked at 103 after some hard runs, but settled around 90-93 on normal driving

This is a terrible idea. If the car didn't need the oil cooling system it has from the factory, they wouldn't put it in there to begin with. I hope you never sell that car to someone else.

Sorry you may have got me wrong, I didn't bypass the entire oil cooler system, I just replaced the standard square one in the arch with a aftermarket mocal one that in fact slightly bigger in size and more rows, at a fraction of the price of a new amg one

I still also have the front mount installed also

So maybe even improved the cooling

Which one did you go with? Any pics of how you mounted it?

I believe the OEM arch cooler has a bypass thermostat so you may see your oil taking longer to heat up to temp.

I just found a new universal mocal one on ebay, it was around 10mm bigger all round and had mounting points either end, it wouldn't fit it the standard oil cooler mounting cradle, so I made some brackets up from the mounting lugs to what the standard cradle attached too

I have retained all the original oil lines and not cut anything. I didn't see any thermostat inside the old cooler as I cut it open as was going to use where the oil pipes go into, but I tested the time on the temp of the oil up to 90 before and after and it's the same. Maybe slightly cooler but the ambient temp could of been slightly different I suppose.

Its saved me around £800, it's something that's not seen either as tucked away.

My original point was or just asking for a normal driving to work and back car and used as a second car that is that second cooler really necessary along with a big front mount.

I will take some photos soon when I double check for leaks in a week or so

Thanks. I am considering upgrading mine for my track car since the OE cooler fins has seen better days. Just looking at options now.

I believe it is mocal 235 16row...
It was brand new, not used, second hand to me, I believe it was for a high spec subaru sti, it was a tight fit in height, but I still managed to get the fan and cowling all in fine.

It was adapting the standard Mercedes oil lines that was the issue and I didn't want to cut anything, but got round it, and if a decent standard oil does come up I can just reinstall it without issue
