Better gas mileage finally achieved

I've had this car for a number of years now. I've asked gas mileage questions here and there, seemed that mine was one of the worst gas mileages out there. I was getting 11.5 MPG in commute bumper to bumper here in NY, speeds like average 15-25 MPH.
In time I tried:
Replaced the intake manifold gasket, eliminating a small vacuum leak
Replaced all 4 oxygen sensors
Replaced (due to code) the driver's side fuel pump with filter and fuel pressure regulator.

These got me into the 12.5 MPG range.
Then more recently I had to replace the thermostat, because I snapped the plastic nipple, while doing my second accessory belt replacement.

I'm guessing that this 12 years old thermostat was not closing fully anymore, because now I'm in the 14-15.5 MPG range with the same old commute.
I'm used to the thermostat affecting the MPG, but that was not enough of a concern for me to do a thermostat replacement.
So I would say that between oxygen sensors, intake manifold gasket and thermostat, I got the car where it should be, gas mileage wise.
Took me a while ...

Aren't there less cars on the road as well these days?

I wish this was the case.
As I sit in traffic every day, I ponder philosophically what happened with the traffic, why are there not less people on the road in today's conditions.
My average for a 22 mile one way commute is 2 hours one way and 2.2 hours back. Most miserable traffic in NYC/Brooklyn.
My theory is that due to Covid, parents don't trust school buses anymore and everyone drives kids to school.
I did notice that in days with no school, my commute time drops to 1 hour or even ...once or twice a year.. to less than 1 hour.

This would make me blow my brains out. Might make sense to get a hybrid beater if this is what your commute is like.

11.5 mpg (that's the small US gallon too I take it) does not sound too bad in bumper to bumper traffic......dont forget that when you are stationary you are doing zero MPG....that really affects the average!

The C63 only deals with my commute couple times a month.
Like I said, today was the second time after changing the thermostat and saw 15.5 MPG. !!!!!
I became so focused on the gas mileage on this car in the past, that I took into consideration the duration that the car idled at the carwash. I would reset the mileage and refill. Otherwise my average really went down.

are you calculating by hand or using the dash display? i only ask because the dash display is very generous in calculation from what i've seen.

Bumper to bumper the best i have acheived is about 17mpg, measured from full tank to full tank and going by traveled distance.
The best highway result i´ve acheived is 25.5mpg, but THAT wasn´t fun at all.
Just did it to verify if health of car is ok.

Yes, I am using the display and yes, you're right that it's a bit generous.
My reason is not so much because the gas is $$ now, but because it meant my car was running too rich and I want my car to run correctly. Too rich can mean slower too.
Can't believe that I finally got past this.

Oh man, I remember those days. I moved out of NY after 9/11 destroyed the business I was working for. Now I ***** when my commute is 30 mins on the rare days I actually need to go into the office.
