Loud popping from the panoramic sunroof

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2014 c63 amg coupe. The roof in multiple places is cracking and popping while driving especially on bumpy roads and going in and out of driveways.

how have you guys fixed this and what did it cost? I got quoted $1,400 by my dealer when I just said “there’s loud banging in the roof” he immediately said “it’s the sunroof it’ll cost $1,400”.

It definitely is the sunroof but you also definitely don't need to have it replaced.

After a track day mine would do exactly the same thing while driving at 5 km/h in my underground garage. The pops are caused by the roof cassette bolts working themselves slightly loose and the chassis flex every time you drive over a bump. The bolts holding the roof cassette simply need to be re-tightened. The third time I took it in (they would re-tighten them only to have it happen again after the next track day) the tech was smart enough to apply some Loctite on them and it has been perfectly quiet ever since. It was a few hundred bucks in labour but nowhere near $1400.

Video below is the solution on an E class, but same process to fix as a DIY project.

Wonder what costs $1400, they are not replacing it for that, are they just figuring out what is wrong for that + parts seems like the we hate working on sunroofs and don't want to deal with it price.

he mentioned that they needed to completely disassemble and reassemble the sunroof. But after watching YouTube videos I know this is overkill. The bolts are simply loose, just need to find someone in Los Angeles who can drop the headliner and tighten bolts and use loctite at a reasonable price.

That is a different creaking sound from what I was experiencing on mine (C63 Coupe) and what I presume the OP is hearing based on his description. In my case it was usually a single, loud bang or snapping noise, in particular at very low speeds that would happen whenever all four wheels were not on perfectly level ground (like getting out of my underground parking spot and one of the wheels driving over a smooth undulation in the concrete garage floor when approaching a drain for example or when one of the front wheels goes up a driveway with a slight grade while the other three are still on the flat portion of the road. It was a loud snap, and then it mostly creaked but nothing like the sounds in the video. That's the headliner all right - the issue I had was with the glass roof itself.

Yes - dealership. Unfortunately I'm in Toronto, Canada and I see you're in LA - but if you ever make a 4,000 km trip I know exactly who can fix it for you here.

The roof cassette on the coupe is a single unit, which is the part that was working itself loose from the chassis flexing and making the creaking sound. It does not require disassembly. I just dug up the invoices from when I had the work done on mine - two of them were for 0.7 hours each and the last was for 1.0 hours, which also included lubricating everything as the sunroof was opening rather slowly and would sometimes stop in the middle (2 x $118.30 and $169.00 respectively).

hey is it possible for you to upload the invoice for this? I think it might be useful to bring to a dealer to show them what exactly needs to be done.

and yes, the sound is mostly a single loud bang or repeated loud bangs if on a really bumpy road, going into a driveway, etc.

Relevant pages from last two invoices scanned and uploaded in attached PDF (and relevant sections highlighted). If we ever meet IRL, you owe me a beer... I hate doing administrative work.
