Help and advice needed

Hi, had my C63 for just over a year now and have loved it. I knew it had a few things needing doing to it and service A light came on, so booked it into an independent Mercedes garage. The day before it was due to go in the engine management light came on but drove fine. Took it in the next day and told the garage, they said no problem will look at that and then carry on with service/mot. An hour later they phoned me and said they weren’t going any further with anything because of the amount of work needed and costs, I asked for a breakdown of things and it turns out there’s some damage to oil cooler and thermostat, they said it’s had an impact on drivers side front corner. For the mot they said It needs front disks and pads, they quoted £896 but I can do those myself, cracked alloy they quoted £150, two front tyres, height adjust broken (not sure what this is) £351, EML thermostat £590. Then they said they wouldn’t proceed as it’s had a secondary cat delete, so would still be a fail, to replace the cat they said the Mercedes part £4293.60 and they said it would then need recoding as they would have coded out the old cat. They then said they don’t know why the engine light is on, they said it could be the thermostat, oil cooler, exhaust delete or damage to the wiring.
just looking for any advice on any of this, really don’t want to get rid of it but wondering what to do next. Any thought or ideas would be really appreciated.
thanks for looking. Andy

Have you thought about getting a second opinion? Something doesn’t add up here, why do they care about secondary cat delete? That shouldn’t cause any error/issue. Anyway, they aren’t willing to work on it, find you a reputable INDY shop or dealer that can do a thorough inspection then go from there.

I'd find another shop and get a second opinion.

Firstly you why have you not gone to another garage? Secondly you do know this is a predominantly US forum and not the UK don’t you? So not many people on here can recommend a garage to use.

I am from the UK and would only trust a handful of garages with my car. If you tell me what area you are from and how far your willing to travel I will tell you the nearest place to take your car as it sounds like the garage you took the car to don’t have a clue what they are doing.

Thanks for your reply. Going to get it booked in to a garage close to me for just a mot and see what they come back with. Was just a bit shocked at the time about what came back from the garage. Garage I took it to was/is a Mercedes specialist but maybe not with an older amg. They gave the feeling that I should just scrap it. Love the car and know it’s going to cost money but that’s fine. Thanks for also pointing out about forum location. I’m in Hertford. Thanks again, Andy

Thanks for advice. Just an update, took the car to a local garage for mot test, passed everything except high emissions, couple of advisories. They read the engine code that had appeared and said it said two thermostats weren’t reading the same, so they thought one said the engine was still cold when it was hot so was over fuelling it, hence the high emissions. They didn’t want to do anymore and recommended going to the first garage. I didn’t, I went to a third local garage and they said because it had a secondary cat delete, they thought it probably hadn’t be remapped, hence the fault and rich mixture. He managed to get it through test and put new disks and pads on the front. Do I get it remapped or just carry on as it is. Thanks again for help….on both sides of the Atlantic

Getting your tune dialed-in is generally a good idea, especially if you purchased the car with modifications.

Seems like there's no shortage of assumptions going on with these shops you've been going to.

A clean base tune to start followed by data logging / adjustments should give you a real picture of what's going on here.
