Grrr. Jammed pano roof shade

UPDATED JULY 15

All is fixed and the shade appears to work normally. However, I will likely not use the roof or shade again until the fall when the sun is a bit weaker. That way if it jams again, it won't be as uncomfortable when I drive around while waiting for a service appointment and parts. At least it looks like the dealer did a good job as the headliner appears to be in good shape and properly installed. I may take a closer look later just to be sure.

UPDATED JULY 14

I took the car in for service today. Dealer says the entire shade assembly must be replaced. Dealer will have parts in hand tomorrow, so hopefully I will be without the car for just 1 night. This is a newly opened dealer and the service writer said he had seen 1 other C-class with this same shade problem. I am starting to worry that this may be a defective design and that MB will have ongoing problems.

I'll update again once I have the car back.

-------------------------------------------

I opened my pano roof this evening when I started the car to let out some of the very hot air that had accumulated from parking in the sun all day. When I tried to close the roof, the shade jammed and will not move past 1/3 of the way closed. At least the roof itself is closed.

I have an appointment for Tuesday to get it fixed, but this should not happen on brand new cars. Based on reports in this forum, I am the second unlucky E1 owner to have this experience.

Now I have to wear a hat while driving.

Hopefully these are both sample defects.

Yep that is the second one. Glad I didn't get it even though the mrs wanted it.
Sorry to hear this is not an isolated issue.

Hey there! Sorry to hear about that! This is too familiar for me...

I believe I'm the "first" one on this forum that experienced this issue. Please update this thread when you get yours serviced. I would love to know what the repair entails, how long it takes, and any thoughts after the repairs are done. I'm planning on making a service appointment within a few weeks to get this looked at.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope it's a quick and easy fix.

It shouldn't, but these are mass-produced items and sometimes, there are small (but annoying) issues - particularly with entirely new models.

I was one of the first in the U.S. to take delivery of the M Sport F30 335i.

In the first three months of ownership, these are the problems I encountered:

1) On day 1 (hours after delivery), one of the rear taillight assemblies simply fell off my car. It was just dangling off my trunk. I could pop it back into place . . . temporarily. Any slight road imperfection jarred it loose.

2) There was rust all over the front seat frames. Visible rust also covered the seat belt hardware.

3) Comfort Access stopped working - entirely.

4) Adaptive Headlight Failure.

5) Electric cooling fan malfunction (happened 3 separate times; car was at the dealer for weeks). This was the dangerous problem that resulted in my car being bought back.

While driving, I could suddenly hear the electric cooling fan going crazy. I mean, that thing got loud. Next, the steering wheel would start to shudder intensely. Finally, the car would suffer significant power loss.

The first time this happened, I was merging onto the interstate. I lost power as a semi truck was bearing down on me. I hit the hazards and crawled toward the shoulder (fully touching cloth at that moment).

In sum, I can definitely empathize with new car problems. The sad fact is, they happen (irrespective of manufacturer or model). The glass half-full news is that you only have one issue going at the moment (albeit a very inconvenient one).

Best of luck getting the issue resolved! I'm sure it will be a quick fix.

Not surprising. I looked into the sunroof and glass for my A class and it appeared to come from a Chinese sunroof supplier. Wouldn't surprise me if they supply all the Merc models. Made in Germany not so much...

Made in China

'Made in China' is not a terrible thing as long as they had a quality prototype to copy.

Very problematic roof, too much technology. Sad to see no option for normal moonroof. Mine will be no pano on my MY16. Not sure about the I pad on the dash either. We'll see ??

I would have skipped the roof entirely, but I was seduced by the E1 package. Overall, I'd much rather save the 200 lbs and skip the extra (seemingly) unreliable mechanicals.

I hope I don't end up regretting the whole E1 decision.

The rest of the E1 package is very nice. I like the red CF interior, the custom pattern on the seats and all of the other equipment in the E1 package.

Unfortunately for me, my wife absolutely loves the pano so when we are together I'm constantly opening it during the drive and closing it when parked to keep it cool inside. Got my fingers crossed that it doesn't jam and needs replacing. With that said, if its a design flaw, I'll end up replacing several of these over the summer.

Not yet. Parts are in hand, but dealer is still working on the install. Dealer is still hoping to complete by close of business this evening.

It is certainly different than the roof on my wife's W204 C63. I don't know about any other MB models as I have not been in any of them. I don't think the design is unique to the C63, so I expect that it is the same as the pano roof on a normal W205 C-class.

hmm i wonder if it is the same pano roof as my wife's 2010 E350, or the 2012 GLK350 we had with the pano roof. never had any issues.

Perfect. Glad it was an easy fix and great to hear the technicians were careful.

Great to hear man! I'm taking mine in tomorrow, hopefully it won't take too long either (although I have some other issues to repair as well).

I'm praying the techs install everything good and I get no new creaks/rattles....

M-B won't pay what it takes to source from Germany. Fact - Chinese can manufacture anything at any specified quality level. Fact - when you see a dash made from crap shiny plastic it's not because the parts manufacturer can't provide a higher quality piece - it's because the automobile manufacture won't pay a penny more for higher quality.
