Refer to the manual as it seems to be normal. Unfortunately!

I just got the same message today. I put 1900 miles on and had a oil change when I did the differential lube change. I now have about 4000 on total so about 2000 after the oil change. I checked the dip stick and I am down only about 1/4 of a quart.
What did all of you find after the message? Did you check the level with the dip stick? and if so how low was yours?
I dismissed the message when it came up --did it come back for you?

The message came on in the evening when I went out for dinner, my plan was to swing by the dealership to have them top it up. But after dinner the message did not come on during the drive home.

If you get a chance check the dip stick level.

Make sure to check physically!! Some times I would get the error how ever when I would measure and it would be fine. Dont ruin your engine be smart... oh and fyi lets say you add to much and blow it up you cant blame the sensor as the car doesn't record oil level and the reminder in the ecu, per my sa.

Dave -that is what I hope everyone does and checks the oil level with dip stick when they get warning as it might just be the sensors are bad.
Lets hear from more of you that had the message for low oil and see what you found after checking the dip stick.

Just over 5k miles but I did an oil change around 2.5k after a track event. Just got a message today to add a quart.

Mine also got the add quart of oil warning last week. I have ~2500 miles. When I checked it via dip stick it was completely full.
The warning only came that one time the day before I took my car into the dealership for creaking dash and I don't have it back yet. So I have only seen this the one time.

I just got the message yesterday. I let the car cool for a few minutes, then checked the dip stick. Oil level was full. While the message was annoying, I am happy as the engine seems nice and tight. I have 6,000 miles on the clock and the oil was changed at 1,000.

While I think the result will be the same the manual asks that the oil is checked when engine is at the operating temp.

At ~4300 miles and only added oil once when I got the check oil light. I check it once every two or three weeks and keep a 1 quart bottle (unopened) in the trunk. I have a 5 qt bottle in the garage and add what's needed (but not too much) every month. The reality is these cars require oil. The M4 needed oil early but the best thing about the BMW is you can simply drive to the nearest dealer for a free top off.

Ha ha, drove a bmw e90 for too long, forgot there's such a thing called dip stick. I'll check it later when my car cools down.

Mine has less than 500 miles and I already got the oil message. I should check and call the dealer.

I had the message twice before my first oil change @ 3500 miles. I checked it myself the first time as soon as I got home and it was fine so I stopped by the dealer the second time to make sure and again the level was good. Better be safe then sorry imho

Mine came on day 2 and day 10. Plenty of oil in it both times. Haven't seen the light (since 2500 miles). They must have goofy sensors.

I brought my car in for the 10k service, my sa informed me that oil light issue has been addressed with a software update. that same update also addressed my intermittent misfire.

Yeah I only have 500 miles and also had a quart low message pop up. I haven't seen it again since and didn't need to add oil. Imagine the look on my face with only 500 miles....WTF.

software update? how does that fix the issue? not sure i understand.

on the burning oil issue... maybe it is with amg's?

I had a 6.2 liter w204 and it burned 1 quart- 1.5 quarts every 10k miles.

12k miles on my f80 m3 and no low oil.

Because unlike the W204, the new engine is nice and tight and is not actually burning any oil. Rather, the sensor and/or software that monitors the sensor is flaky and is reporting a low oil condition when the oil is in fact at or near full. Thus, a software update will likely fix this erroneous report.

oh ok.

does the c63 also have no dipstick a la the bmw's?

i always wished they had a redundant dipstick ... it's the germans fixing an issue that wasn't broke.

Nope. AMG still provides the flexy dip stick that is a total PITA to stick back into the engine.
