While mounted, it blocks some of the buttons for accessing NAV and RADIO, but then again I just use the COMAND console stuff in the middle to access anyways. When the phone isn't there, it's very unobtrusive.

iPhone 6 PLUS for reference. It's a little tall, so I had to angle it forward. Using an iOttie phone holder on a universal ball joint platform.
Leaning in, so the top of the phone doesn't rub against the pillar. I will have to report back after I drive the car. I don't yet know how well it will hold.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
In the above posters photos, I find the placement to put the phone too low and out of direct view and I wouldn't mount it on the ash tray lid for that reason.
I went with a similar product, called the core 360. It didn't use a ball so bouncing wouldn't move the phone. It uses a similar design but, a flat washer and magnetic base. The steeling also had a thicker mount so, when installed on the phone it was more obtrusive.

I really like this product. The magnet that goes on your phone or case is flat so you don't even know it's on the phone. The base is adjustable also. I mounted mine on the undersurface like in the pic so I can still close the small console still.
The back of my phone has a thin little metal disc.
I do like that Core 360 though, the metal disc washer with the matching indent would definitely keep things in place. My phone only pops off (into the cup holder) if I'm in Race and the suspension takes a hard hit. But that might just be enough to prevent it.
I bought like 10 of them. 1 for each car/company car +1 for the road.
Fits in my center vent cluster closest to me. I can use all the touch features of the phone while driving.
I hate the cup holder door being open so i run a charging cable out of the center arm rest and plug it into the usb port in that console.
I have OCD so its super clean and works great

BUT, I am going to hook you guys up with the trick install, Hope you enjoy..
The problems with all of your other mounts..
Ugly, Bulky. Cannot close ashtray door. Blocks air vents or field of view. Mounts are not strong enough to keep iPhone from falling. Incapable of landscape mode. Phone attachment makes phone bulky when not on car mount. Ashtray mount makes phone too low to see easily.
Core 360 Mount. Strong, can change angle or tilt. Can spin phone 360 degrees. Mount on back of phone is a thin metal washer, not obtrusive or thick.
Ribbon Thunderbolt cable...Purchased through Amazon, search and you will find.
You can easily thread the cable through the ashtray door or console armrest.

Can you tell me where you bought?
That being said, here are a few links to others I have found. I have no idea if they work or are thin enough to do what I did with mine..

Wireless charging is very convenient because you do not have to remove the cable.

This was my fix to the issue with a good iPhone mount. I have the iPhone 6plus and have no problems of it falling off. It only blocks the center vent, which you can close, and my solution does not require gluing anything to the car and is completely removable.
1. You need to block off a vent permanently
2. You need to use a special case to work with the mount
3. You need to route a USB cable through the venting system of the car
My main question is how you routed the cable and where did it end up getting power?
Also, the link you provided shows a different mounting system to the vent than the one you have. Was it modded?
