It's automatic, and it's very reluctant to change gears. I set my individual settings as engine in race, exhaust in sport+, suspension in comfort, traction control on, transmission in manual, and just use that every day.

As far as I know the only real difference between Race mode and Sport+ is that the computer will only ever go up gears near redline for Race.

Sounds about right. I also find that the engine sounds even better in race than it does in sport+ when using my settings with the loud exhaust and manual transmission, but I don't know if that really is the case or if it's just operator bias. I've only used race once or twice.

AMG has suggested that race mode does 2 things. 1) it remaps engine management parameters to give more linear power delivery (less mid-range surge). 2) it provides more horse power than the other modes.

In auto shift mode, the transmission will not up shift until near red-line. You can shift it manually even in auto mode. The transmission will also down shift aggressively on its own. This is great on the track, but not so great in street driving.

For this reason, as others have said, I use individual mode with the engine set to race, the exhaust set to loud, the transmission in manual and the suspension in comfort. I also sometimes set the stability control to sport mode for some extra sliding in corners. This does require me to up shift manually, but that is fun on familiar roads.

I have noticed on my car in race mode it stays in manual and it shifts down on its own but if I try to engage race start it goes to automatic

Quick question. Does Race mode deliver the extra HP & torque between a C63 and a C63S? Or does the C63S have the extra HP & torque on tap all the time?

It's on tap all the time.

all the time. however i do remember reading somwhere on here that someone had ran on a dyno and ran an extra 20Hp btween sport+ and Race. as always there could have been other factors that made it jump but thought i would throw it out there

Mine stays in manual for upshifts and downshifts, and automatically downshifts from 3rd to 2nd only.

Race mode does not provide extra horsepower. I've spoken and confirmed with my tuner who has 100% confirmed in Race mode, the engine map is exactly the same as SPORT+, just slightly different transmission map.

The center exhaust valve is only activated in race mode I believe as well? Need to fact check myself but pretty sure that is the only mode it is active in.

There’s gotta be some differences in the map. Mine pops and bangs a lot more in Sport + vs race mode.

Same. Because I drive in race mode 95% of the time and comfort 5%, the ECU has learned my driving style in race mode. I can’t get the pops, bangs, and shotgun blasts to chill out in race mode! Every lift off throttle I’m getting a burble or pop/bang. It’s awesome.

Hmmm interesting. I’ll try driving in race mode more often. I do know that transmission shifts the fastest in race mode. Almost DCT like, almost.
