Nav Screen Rattle- How to take apart?

Hey guys, first thing I noticed when they unloaded my car off the trailer from Houston was how badly the nav screen rattles. Over the tiniest bump it creaks and cracks. Applying any pressure to the back or sides of the screen yields even more noises. I know the techs apply felt tape to fix this problem but given the week long weight to get a loaner and the fact I just received the car, I thought this might be a good opportunity for a DIY. However, feeling around the back of the screen I was unable to figure out how the back separates from the screen.

Has anyone attempted this? If so, how did you do it and would you recommend DIY'ing or is it better to bring it in? Obviously a risky piece to be working on if your not super familiar with it.

Thanks!

Most do this and if they don't, they soon will. I have had mine in for warranty work on this several times and it still does it. The service manager asked me to wait a while longer before they try again as MB is working on a better fix. Talk to your dealer to see if they can fix it.

have a look over on the regular w205 C class forum. they have a few threads where people have done full swaps of the screen(non nav to nav) so there are def some how to over there in case you want to attempt it

Thank you! It looks like the whole dash has to come out, so I'll let the dealer handle that.

I was thinking the same.. better to have them handle it rather than screwing up something which might not be covered by warranty.

I actually think I have rattles coming from both the nav screen and the center speaker grille. Probably one of the worst rattles I've ever had in a car. Hoping to get it fixed soon.

Thank you for this! I found a similar video where they went in the opposite order so it made it looks like the Nav screen was the last piece that could come out. Great news to hear that's not the case. I may actually attempt to DIY this fix now.

I attempted this just now and walked away extremely frustrated. In removing the nav screen screws, I managed to lose a torx bit and an extension with another torx bit on it. So I turned 1 rattle into potentially 2 much worse ones. I took out the center console and still could not access or even find where they ended up. I have not test driven the car yet but I'm extremely frustrated. I was trying to avoid having to wait a week to get my car into the dealer and another week for them to fix it because I didn't want to give up the new car I just got. If you are attempting this yourself, while straightforward, I would not recommend it because it is in extremely tight quarters due to the windshield and you are having to navigate the screwdriver with a torx but in an area which you cannot see into. You have tools that are solid and not with magnetic extensions or bits, I would maybe attempt it again. I'm just praying these get stuck somewhere where they won't rattle. What a nightmare!!

hopefully the dealer doesn't detect that you took it apart as they can deny warranty work payment

Yes of course. The good news is I was able to retrieve the stray bit with a magnetic wand. Extension with bit is MIA as its behind the big plastic shell that houses the vent ductwork somewhere. The good news is, I seemed to have fixed the nav rattle and the extension piece seems to have lodged somewhere and I haven't heard any rattles from that. So for now I think I'm ok (knocks on wood). I swear I have the worst luck with cars! Lol.

As a victim of my own tinkering over the years, (and being trained by Toyota Motor Corp. which likely had more impact)..

Whenever attempting repairs on asembled structure, magnetic (rare earth bits) and taped (or shrink wrapped for the formal tools) are the norm..
Retrieving stuff is super frustrating...

If it can go wrong, and you let it, then it will..

Glad you got your sorted now..

I have had the interior of my car torn down to fix all these issues and install dynamat / foam & lube for all; doors incl rer hatch, B pillars, trunk, rear quarters, rear bench out, center console, dash binnacle and courtesy light pods..

Its a lot better now..
