Tyre and Rim insurance
Allianz Tyre & Rim Insurance
As careful as we can be with driving, unfortunately we cannot predict how rough the roads can be over the next 3 years. It is simple and cost effective system to protect you if your car suffers accidental damage to its Tyres or Rims by various road hazards such as potholes or road debris over the next 3 years. Coverage includes tyres being punctured or a blow out from a pothole, nail, screw metal or debris and the rims cracked or misshapen by a pothole or road debris. If the damage is significant for both tyres and rims the out of pocket expense can increase dramatically easily costing you hundreds for repair or replacement. Tyre & Rim Insurance protects you from the cost of replacement or repairs so you can drive at ease.
Benefits of Prestige Cover:
- One upfront payment of $620 for a full 3 year of coverage
- No excess on claims
- Tyre insurance pays up to $800 per tyre with total claim allowance of $1400 per policy year
- Rim insurance pays up to a maximum of $1,100 per policy year
- Mercedes Benz Roadside towing to the nearest Mercedes Benz Dealership if you cannot drive following a tyre or rim damage and have no spare wheel
Optional benefits include:
- Emergency accommodation of up to $150 per night up to 5 nights a policy year if you are 200 km away from home
- For only additional $50 on top of the Prestige cover making it $670.
Any takers??
Doesn't cover kerbing etc. and with such a low cap, you may as well just take the risk and save the premium. Also if there is damage to the wheels presumably the comprehensive insurance covers that.
What irked me the most is that they kept showing me the cost added to my monthly payment, despite me insisting to them I wanted to see "the price I would pay if I were going to buy that package with cash today." The finance guy was really flustered that I was questioning his whole logic, but he was offering me things that were going to add approx $400 /mo to a 48 month loan. Almost $20,000 in various insurance, protection, and warranties!
I left with none of those options. Quite frankly, if it worked out in your favor very often they wouldn't sell it. It's all about capitalizing on your fears of loss and how emotionally upset you get when something does happen.
During the life of the lease, we had 7 tire replacements and 2 cracked rims. The tire insurance covered everything.
The roads suck in Michigan so it's a pretty safe bet you'll be using the insurance.

I did however pick a few holes in the policy and got a discount.
I think the key point is to check the policy as cover and cost seem to change depending on location and dealer. Make sure you get cover for the most common issues YOU will face. Its obviously no use if all your local roads are good and your car will never see a kerb. Also be sure to shop around and see if you can get a better deal!

My Lexus F-Sport GS350 lease expires in Feb. and of course my 19" tires are worn out, so I have my tire retailer on the lookout for a set of 19" take-offs that will pass a safety. It's all I need on lease surrender.
HOWEVER, when I leased a 3-series back in 2011, the "warranty guy" was close to my age and said "look, I'm supposed to sit here and upsell you on all of these (8 total) additional warranties. The truth is you only need to get the wheel and tire one".
At first I stayed firm and told him no, but right before the end of the paperwork, I added it on. It came out to an extra $45/month added onto my payment. For BMW at least at that time, it did cover rash and dents.....which is good because those low-pros took a beating from the Dallas potholes. I had 6 tires replaced and had all 4 rims replaced...saving me thousands of dollars. Simliar to Sters85's situation.
So as others have stated, check the fine print on what exactly the tire/wheel insurance covers. The glass, interior, paint, etc. warranties are scams.
Lease vs buy might also factor into your decision as well. Are you buying?

When I asked my SA at Mercedes if they cover it in their Tire and Rim protection package as well, he thought I was out to lunch lol.
