Back up camera cover removel

I am getting my emblems black chromed. I did not realize that the rear star was also the cover for the camera. So has any one removed this, and how much of a PITA is It ? If at all. Thank Shaun.

Why do you even need to take the whole of the cover off to paint? I'm sure you can just take the star off.

Are you saying the coupe has the cam under the star??
On the sedan it is under the trunk lip above the lic plate.

Oh you 're right buddy. It's actually underneath the trunk lip above the lic plate. I always thought it was beneath that star. My bad .

The coupe rear camera is under the star. It lifts up to reveal the camera when you select reverse or use 360 camera.

So no one has answered the OP. How does the chrome star come off? The replacement piece I have shows dbl-sided tape and pins. But, I'll tell you what. I can't get that badge to even wiggle a little. Anyone done this yet? And if so, how?

It was so easy for me when I did it.

Mine's a coupe, meaning, when I put it in reverse, the whole badge rotates upward for the rear view camera. I'll look again tomorrow whether I can get something under the edge of the star.

A hair dryer and fishing line.

I blacked out my rear emblem, it pops off with a little fishing line. There are three prongs to line up with your replacement. If all three don’t fit (like they didn’t on mine) just cut one off to make the emblem straight, the double sided tape will hold it just fine.

for easier application, i also popped open the back cover every so often To give me better angles. You can do this from your main screen up front.

I don't understand the idea of using fishing line and popping it off. That works for the AMG and C63s Symbol but not the star. I replaced mine but the 3 studs are held in with screws from inside the trunk, I had to remove the liner in the trunk lid to access the 3 screws...mounting the new star was the same, 3 pins to align to holes but also 3 screws going into those pins to hold it. There was no tape used and I still don't use any.. I have a sedan.

I have a coupe, there were no screws, just prongs going into holes in the trunk lid. Fishing line was just to get it to initially prop off, you could use a plastic tool (carefully) to pry it up too. There was double sided tape around the star to secure it to the trunk, I’m assuming prongs strictly for alignment.

Fishing line to cut through the glue and a flat head screw driver to pry the star from side to side until it out.

I guess its possible...or you (and other posters) broke the small screws out . they are easy to break off. I bought a gloss black replacement star and it had the screw thread too that is how I found out to look for them. But guess its all good if it works for you as described.

It was the biggest pain for me.

After a lot of fiddling I was finally able to remove the camera cover.

But the biggest issue was getting the star off of the camera cover. It is held in by three plugs and the entire circle around the star is held on by adhesive.

I don't know if it's because my car was relatively new, but the adhesive was so strong I had no luck in just getting it off pushing the prongs. So I knew I had to get the circle's adhesive free first, ended up scratching the paint in doing it.

I was able to get the cover off, but I am having a hard time getting it back on, it’s made out of plastic so I don’t want to force it and break something . Any advice on getting this back on?

your instinct will be to place the cover at the bottom of the plastic part on the car and slide up, but it actually goes from somewhere in the middle, if that makes sense.

i struggled with the same thing.
