How to say NO!! when somebody asks to drive your C63?

I'm a clean freak and I don't like people touching my steering wheels. I love my Alcantara steering wheel and even when I drive I wear driving gloves. Also, when someone drives your sports car, they ALWAYS floor it even when you tell them the engine needs to properly warm up. Most importantly they don't drive carefully.

Among all my friends and acquaintances, my C63S coupe is the most attractive one and EVERYONE wants to sit behind the wheel and drive it. Some of these people are not even friends with me.

How do you reject them?

Haha, that's a good idea but they probably wouldn't say something like 'it's just a car why are you so stingy'?

True car guys will understand. I would never have the audacity to ask to drive someone's car. Hell, a friend of mine offered to let me drive his Porsche and Mclaren and I refused on principle because I know if I had them I wouldn't want people driving them.

You don't owe anyone an explanation of your preference, a firm but polite "negative" should suffice.

I couldn't put it any better.

If you want to drive one either buy one or go and
test drive one at a dealer.

Also, tangentially related to this thread, I had an Alcantera wheel in my BMW, and while I didn't wear gloves, I kept hand sanitizer and wipes in the car so I would never get the wheel dirty and after 18 months the wheel looked new still... alternative to wearing gloves.

This pair is my first pair of driving gloves I find them do the job pretty well. On both leather and Alcantara they are non-slippery. Adds friction to the grip and most importantly keep my wheel clean!!

That's cool tip.
For me it goes further down to psychological level. I cannot stand when I handle the steering wheel if my hands are moist. I still get excited when I drive so my hands are usually moist. It's a bit OCD... I love my wheels to look matt, not glossy. A lot of people don't care about that.
Do you clean Alcantara with wet wipes?

Never cleaned it with wet wipes, but I always made sure my hands were grease/oil/dirt free before handling the wheel... obviously no eating while driving etc.... wet wipes seem
Like they would destroy the wheel.

I saw another C63S at the track of a guy who definitely didn't keep his alcantara steering wheel clean. It was nasty. Thing almost looks like faux leather with all that shine and lack of texture.

With that said, I don't wear gloves but I will periodically clean my steering wheel with a brush and alcantara cleaner. So far it still has it's color and fluffiness.

I don't think I'd mind offering someone I trusted a go at driving it, but it's very forward to outright ask to drive someone's car...

I mean, the logic doesn't stack up—if it's 'just a car' why don't they go out and buy one for themselves? But if they can't afford it or don't want to spend the money on it, then it's more than 'just a car', then, isn't it? It's an outlay, a depreciable asset, a thing of pride. If they don't get that (which by asking for a drive they clearly don't), then they certainly don't deserve to have a drive! It's like inviting yourself around for dinner! It's rude!

To be honest, there are certain people I don't even like giving passenger rides to. You know the ones: they dink the door against the next car along on the way in, scuff their heels on the sill, drag their bag down the glovebox and fling the seatbelt clip over their shoulder when they're done. Funnily enough, they're usually the kind of people who could never hope to own something nice...!

Is this really an issue? I just tell my friends "nope" and the convo keeps going to seconds later?

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I just outright say "no." If they push it then they just inadvertently let me know what kind of person they are and I never talk to them again.

I also don't let anyone except about 3 or 4 select people ride in my car. And only me and my girlfriend (we co-own the car) ever drive it.

As for gloves and my Alcantara wheel... I wear Hilts-Willard "Paul" gloves. I researched for months and selected those for many reasons which I can list if any of you are actually interested.

There's a nice write up on the Alcantara site about the cleaning procedure for the material. I have seen badly neglected steering wheels brought back to life. I don't know if i'd go so far as to wear gloves, but I am also OCD about washing my hands and would be severely bothered if I had a steering wheel getting caked up as I see in some customer cars.

There was a 2014 SL63 I had the other day that I really didn't want to touch the wheel, it looked disgusting all matted down in the areas the guy held all the time. 30k mile car.

Thanks for the advice. I hate some acquaintances just outrightly ask you to drive your car. I mean, we put so much hard work into buying and to maintain the car and they don't even appreciate and ALWAYS ruin it someway or another.

I love your gloves man. Where can you buy those? I'm very interested in gloves for driving. Please tell us more about why you selected that pair of gloves.

Thanks!
