Engine Vacuum For Exhaust System

Hello all,

Trying to have the FI exhaust system installed, my local technician is having trouble finding an appropriate engine vacuum source.

Can anyone shine some light possibly with images of where to locate a the vacuum source to activate the valves?

Currently the exhaust has been installed with valves permanently open until a suitable vacuum source.

Help / guidance from vendor / manufacturer has been minimal at this stage.

I've got an IPE exhaust and you have a couple of options. (On my exhaust, the valves are normally closed, and then opened when vacuum is applied.)

You can tap the intake manifold by buying a boost tap from Modal. Or you can tap the vacuum pump at the back of the motor. If you tap the manifold you will need a reservoir and a check valve, otherwise under prolonged boost the valves will close.

My car came with the performance exhaust, and I hate the idea of an extra button or FOB to open my valves. So I'm having an automotive electrical engineer tap the the red LED on exhaust control button in the center console, so I can control the exhaust like factory. It's been a pain in the *** so far, but when it's done it'll be worth it.

How do you like your IPE exhaust? Is it much louder than stock (assuming youre using stock DPs)...I just got the FI Exhaust connected to stock DPs and it feels very quiet for a valved exhaust...

The IPE is probably about 2 notches quieter than the factory PE.

It is much more refined sounding (smoother, less harsh) I actually like it, as it's not as obnoxious as the factory pipes.

The factory is louder because the H pipe valve completely closes and you have all the exhaust noises from all cylinders coming out.

The IPE integrates an X pipe and Eliminates the H and valve completely. The X pipe allows exhaust sound from the left to cancel out some on the right and they claim scavenging may increase performance but I couldn't tell.

I have also eliminated my secondary cats.

Got it, that makes sense. I was told the IPE is pretty similar to FI Exhaust. I wanted my FI to be a bit louder since theyre connected to the stock DPs. I asked the manufacturer and he confirmed the FI exhaust only has 2 vacumn/electronically controlled by remote valves. I also realized the exhaust sounds much better once the engine has warmed up. Interesting right after a cold start with the engine is still well below optimal temps, the exhaust is very quiet.

Since you have a vacuum activated valved system as well, did you notice hp or torque decrease after the installation? I recent noticed after getting the FI system, torque wont go over 470lb on the digital gauge on center console screen and before it would say 500lbs+. Also hp now goes to 503 for a quick second but mostly is well below.

My car works flawlessly. It pegs the display all the time. I think I read somewhere that the engine won't produce full power unless it knows the valves are open.

What did you do to bypass your factory valves?

IPE asks that you leave all the factory valves plugged in. I used the valve simulators that AWE makes.

Before i had the IPE valves integrated into the factory controls it was kind of fun to have a brutally fast car with " quiet "exhaust" in race mode. I surprised a lot of people.
As the vacuum valves default closed. But the reason for owning one of these is to hear and feel the v8 bark.

If I wanted silent but deadly I'd buy electric...

So Im not sure on the factory valves for the H Valve. The FI Exhaust system gets rid of the H valve and replaces it with a X pipe. I had the dealer check if there were any soft codes being thrown up by the CPU and there arent any. So most likely, the installer put a valve simulator for the H valve?? Not sure how to check...

You need 3 simulators unless you left your originals plugged in and ziptied out of the way..

You could look at your old exhaust and see if the actuators are still there...
