New Tyres - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

So I recently fitted new tyres after the old set of Dunlop's prematurely wore out due to camber and toe settings.

I spent a lot of time researching Semi-Slicks as I love the look of them but was worried about the road noise as this is our family everyday car.

My tyre shop replaced the Dunlops with Michelin Super Sports which I drove on for about 3 or 4 days.

The Super Sports were a definite improvement over my worn Dunlops traction wise, however, I noticed that they were a little noisy on the highway.

Traction wise as stated above, they were a lot better than my worn Dunlops but still could manage to break traction from a standing start and flooring it in the low gears up to 3rd.

My tyre shop offer a one month return on Michelin Tyres if not 100% happy with the performance so I returned the car and had the Pilot Sport 4S's fitted no questions asked.

I got to say that these 4S's are absolutely brilliant when it comes to controlling my 382kw/atw & 882 nm.

I'm still playing around with different situations we're my old tyres would break loose but first impressions are WOW with a big smile on my face.

I'll give more feedback as I drive some more but for anyone needing new tyres or wanting more traction I highly recommend the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

Size wise, I'm still running factory black cross spoke wheels with 295/30/19 on my rear and 265/35/19 on the front.

Very nice! I bet they are a big improvement.

I have a set on the way for my new wheels, cant wait.

Do you mind sending me a DM in regards to what you paid... I was advised they still have to be imported and thus a premium is added to the price.

Thanks

I believe they are available in Australia now via the distributor - big ads for them at Melbourne airport yesterday.

Just due to timing I got mine imported via BMR - not sure the price was much more than normal. And very happy with them, the grip is fantastic.

Haha I was in Melbourne for work Monday/Tuesday and saw those digital displays at the Qantas terminal too!

I still have plenty of life on my stockers, but I really want to run these on my Coupe up another size.

Has anyone tried 275/35/19 fronts and 305/30/20 rears on the Coupe to keep the ratio the same?

Yes sedan...

Been running 295 for quite awhile now.

Honestly I love the look from behind, they fill the guards, and loss of traction even now when tuned and fitted now with the PS4's is not an issue.

Confrontingly large ads aren't they? Certainly can't miss them as you go through security. Seem to run lots of car ads on those screens so must be the agency has a lot of automotive clients!

I'm only 300kms or so into my 4S experience but am mighty impressed so far. I have 285 / 30 / 20s on the rear (10.5 inch wheel) and 265 / 30 / 20s on the front (9.5 inch wheel). Fits beautifully and puts a lot wider track on the road.

Excellent thread - very useful info !!!

RDO247 are you able to do any timed/instrumented runs even if it's only to 100km/h or 62mph, this would be a firm indication of traction improvement, all runs on OEM fitted tyres have never matched or met MB/AMG's acceleration claims.

Also keep us posted on wear/durability performance, I'd guess they won't last very long and more traction tyres usually equals softer faster wearing rubber.

Hey AV1,

Happy to do some time runs to 100kms but will only be with a timer on the phone as I don't have any other equipment.

Id love one of those V-Max's, where do you get those from and how much are they?

Also, Michelin have a garenteed 30k warranty apparently.

I don't drive the car real hard just the accasional from the lights so interested to see how that works out.

Planning to fit front and rear camber kits asap to improve wear and drivability so will review once done.

They know their target audience!

Very nice, looking forward to trying them out soon. I have 305s on the rear with a 12" wheel and fronts the same as now 275s on a 10" wheel.

Thank you RDO247 take your time whenever your ready and it's 'safe' to do so.

Re: timing equipment shouldn't matter what you use as long as you use the same method/hardware on the same road surface before and after mods then the differences will still show

Interesting on the 30k warranty, that sounds outstanding and too good to be true, I'm sure abuse will come into it

12 inch rear? Phew that will be massive fit but not surprised BMR can make it work. They got the fitment absolutely spot on with my estate.

Looking forward to seeing it all set up on the car. Can't be long now?

Actually warranty doesn't apply with the staggered setup. I believe it's 15k.

No matter, you should still see an extra 5k of use along with all the other benefits of the tire.

Correct mileage warranty is 50% on staggered fitments

I would think 305s if 30s would look a little stretched on 12", similar to 265s on 10".

AV1,

No zero to 100's yet hopefully tomorrow.

I did get to the Willowbank drags tonight and ran the car down the quarter mile.

Again I can't express how good these tyres are.

Set the drive mode to RACE with no other changes to the settings.

Deflated tyres to 28psi.

No burn out and avoided the water all together and as this is the first time down the strip in over 10 years, just floored it when the light went green and my brain told my foot to push the pedal to the floor.

So my reaction time's slow along with my 60' time.

I'll work on these on my next visit to the track.

Those who have more drag racing experience chime in with any tips to shave a bit more off my 11.9...

1st run 12.3
2nd run 11.9

Outstanding effort well done ! and I'm sure others too will appreciate the feedback

I think your ET proves the effectiveness of the new tyres compared to the current stock OEM fitments, AFAIK I've not seen any stock C63S instrumented 1/4 mile runs that are under 12secs.

Hey RDO247,

Is there a reason you're running 295/30 in the rear instead of the OEM spec of 35? Is it because of rubbing issues?

No, 30's where chosen for the 295's as they were the closest match to the standard 265's overall diameter.

The overall diameter is what normally effects the speedo and some safety features.

When going away from factory sizes sizes you want to ensure that the overall diameter remains as close as possible to what was factory.

Yup, same as a 285 on the 10.5" wheel.

I prefer a bit of stretch on the 305 so it doesn't look too chunky... also I can stay low
