C63s Track
Originaly Posted in the incorrect sub forum thank you BLKROKT for your reply

Hi,This is my first post on this site, I have just taken delivery of a new C63 s with ceramics which will get 4 to 5 track days a year on dry tracks. I have had a fair amount of track time in the past mainly in Lotus’s. Looking forward to lots of fun in this beast which is about twice as heavy and and has three times the power. I have a new spare set of standard AMG rims to mount some track dedicated tyres. It seems that I should go for either an R spec with a wear factor of about 80 ie trofeo R or Sportmaxx Race OR slightly less sticky pilot sport cup 2. Going to Phillip island in the early new year where it should be hot and fast. I am not looking to win competitions or break the car so don’t really want to be putting new sets of tyres on regularly, but do love the speed , I was around 1.57 at the Island in the lotus. Any advice on how this car will perform on the two types of tyre would be appreciated ,cheers.

The wear factor for the Trofeo R is 60 and it's 180 for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. That's a huge difference.

I would probably go with the Michelin's since you're just going to enjoy some fun and not to "win competitions". The Michelin's are probably 90% as fast as the Trofeo R, but they should last 3x longer.

Thank you all I did end up running A050’s on my last Elise and The difference between them and the standard Advans was huge.. of course the little car was very light and economical on tyres
I will go with the ps2 or re71r, depends on the deal I can get.

See my post on track days. You will be lucky to get a full day out of the front tires with either brand.

W126 500 SEC, W208 CLK55 AMG (TRACK CAR), W163 ML350, W164 ML500, 2009 W204 C63 (TRACK CAR, 190E 2.6
Hi Alanst,
I run in general supersprint eventsand have a 2001 W208 CLK55 I use as a Track Car and I use Hankook Z221's, Medium Compound (265/35/18) on a 9" rim and have found them to be a better tyre than the AO50's.
Having said that, my best time at the Island was a 1:54:02 with AO50's (Medium Compound) however I managed to have Two Blow-outs on the same day, one at the Southern Loop and the other at the last corner coming onto the main straight and you know how frightening that can be.
Very lucky I wasn't thrown into the wall! I also managed another blow-out on turn one at Sydney Motorsport Park , again with AO50's.
My tyre pressures were as recommended by Yoko, 33 psi hot.
I run the Hankooks at around 38 psi hot.
My best time at PI with the Hankooks was 1:55:06.
I am preparing a 2008 W204 63 for the Track and will be running the same size Z221's on this car as well.
I found that the AO50's don't like the weight of our cars as they have "soft" wall and especially when you have tracks with long fast left handers, the right front tire is under enormous load.
Before the CLK I was running a W124 300CE fitted with a M117 RUF fuel injected engine which all up weighed in at around 1220 Kg's and i found after much trial and error, the Yoko's were the better tyre.
The Medium Compound Hankooks are "wearing" a lot better than the Yoko's.
Don't get me wrong, the Yoko's are a great tyre on lighter cars but just not right for heavier cars.
Hope this info is of some assistance to you.

I have just completed my first track day which was at Phillip Island, stinking hot with ambient temp of 38 . The pilot sport 2’s behaved perfectly and at around 33psi were always under 200 degrees even on the drivers front. First time in the car so only managed mid 1.59’s but very easily repeated without any drama. Minimal tyre wear at this level of performance which was five 20 minutes sessions, I am loving the car which Is able to both function as a daily and a track car with ease.

When you say "Pilot Sport 2", do you mean the Pilot Sport CUP 2? Just wanted to confirm.

If it was the "Cup 2" glad to hear the treadwear was minimal. How many more sessions do you think you could get out of it?

Hi kJ, yes they are the Michelin pilot sport cup 2 tyres. How many is a little problematic because I can definitely go harder in the future but at that level of attack probably 2-3 which would leave enough rubber to safely drive the 120 km home. I am a fairly smooth driver and there was no drifting even around southern loop !
