Tire Noise

I find my car's tires to be annoyingly noisy so was hoping someone could recommend a replacement tire that is quieter. My car's tires are 255/35 ZR 19 (F); 285/30 ZR 20 (R). Thanks.

What tire did it come with?
When I replaced mine I went with the PS4S and they are quieter and ride better and have better traction.

I just checked Tire Rack's rating on the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires I have and they give it an 8.7 for noise which makes it seem like they're quiet tires which they certainly are not at speed or on some surfaces, so I can't trust their rating system.

spelling error

The Pilot Super Sports are some of the quietest max performance tires out there. They are going to be noisier than most all-season or touring tires. The Michelin PS4S are quieter. If you want the quietest max summer tires, you will need to go to Continental ExtremeContact Sport or Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position, but you will be giving up some capability.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. As far as giving up capabilities, my driving is limited to the streets of South Florida which means it's usually summer year-round so unless it loses grip in rain, the Continentals or Bridgestones sound like they'd fit the bill.

I just looked those tires up on Tire Rack and they both have lower ratings for noise than do my existing tires. I guess I'll have to learn to live with it.

In a lot of ways the noise is a subjective thing. It's more noticeable for some than others. Kinda like how some people are bothered by loud chewing, and others don't really notice or care. With the regular rain in FL, I would say stay away from the S-04 then. They are good in the wet for the first half of their life, but the more they wear, the worse they were (at least when i had them). As they got down to the last 4/32 to 3/32, They would easily lose traction in any steady rain.

P4S will be your best bet, but honestly if you’re looking at compromising drivability for silence, you might have bought the wrong car.

I have P4S’ on my car and tire noise is the least of my worries - they’re probably the most quiet part about the car.

As someone who has owned and driven a Ferrari F355 Spider, an Audi R8 V10 Spyder, a C7 Z06, a 1961 E-Type OTS, a 1963 Austin Healey 3000 all of which equipped with manual transmissions, I think I know a little something about driving performance cars. The C63S is not a sports car; it's a muscle car that happens to be capable of some decent handling and stopping but it's still a muscle car and the driving I do is in city traffic and flat, straight roads so I don't see how any tire I put on my car will compromise drivability as it will still go fast between stop lights, still stop when needed and still handle the occasional twisty if I'm fortunate enough to drive on one. Its performance exhaust makes lovely noise because I always drive in Sport+ but tire noise isn't lovely. My C63S is exactly the right car for my wants and needs.

Ok, I just mean that this car is not known to be quiet.

Tire noise has a lot to do with the surface. Concrete roads are the worst in my experience. It's been a while since I've been to Florida, so don't remember what they use to pave the roads. In terms of noise, the Michelin are some of the quietest max performance tires. I've had Michelins starting with the PS2 through the PSS and now the PS4S on several cars. Don't have my C63S yet, but my current RS5 came with P Zero which got quite noisy once they were about half worn. The PSS is silent in comparison and the PS4S is even better. There are some parts of the Interstate around here that have some rough pavement or are still concrete and on those parts the tires get really loud, but otherwise they are pretty quiet. The road noise is definitely not the loudest part of my car. I do very long road trips and the noise level is pleasant when just cruising along. We do have mostly smooth highways these days. The roads got repaved around here over the last decade and most roads that I drive on these days are very smooth. It was definitely a different story before. Also check the tire pressure and adjust it for normal load. There should be several recommended pressures on the fuel cap sticker for different tires, intended top speed and weight of the car. Lowering the tire pressure to normal load softens the tires, increases comfort and reduces noise. In my experience most people and shops inflate the tires to full load recommended pressure which only makes sense if the car is loaded up with passengers and luggage or you plan on driving the top speed.

P.S. Also, when was the last time you had your alignment checked and the tires inspected for irregular wear? Irregular wear due to improper alignment, tire inflation etc. can cause excessive noise. Inspect the inner edges of the tires etc. How much tread do you have left?
