Fading HUD - stupid mistake

My HUD was quite dim - almost impossible to see. Turned it to max - no change.
Almost called MB garage for control -before call took my sunglasses off - problem solved.
Sunglasses without polaroid - no problem, but sunglasses with polaroid - this dimms the HUD.

Yep, that's one of the main reasons I skipped the HUD. The purpose of polarized sunglasses is to filter out glare that causes undesired reflections off the windshield. The HUD image is physically no different from other reflections off the windshield. It uses the same characteristics of glass, that causes undesired glare. So polarized sunglasses filter this stuff out, and basically make the HUD useless during the day, unless you are willing to change your sunglasses to non-polarized.

I don't drive with sunglasses so I never noticed. I love HUD. I find I never have to look at the cluster unless to check fuel or temps. I especially like how it displays the speed limit in the display and even goes as far to put a second display for when you are in a school zone. Very customisable and with AMG specific content also. I believe the option is less than a thousand dollars as well. It's great at night when one wouldn't be wearing sunglasses.

You want a real shocker with polarized lenses? Look at the PPF on any magno car. It will blow your mind.

The HUD does have some cool aspects. On the FL it can display Track Pace information such as when to brake and when to accelerate and I wish I had that when I drove the Nurburgring, but again that would have meant taking off my sunglasses on a very sunny day. Instead I had to periodically glance down to see upcoming turns etc.

I also think it provides more value on the pre-FL as it makes up for the lack of customizability of the analog gauge cluster. With the digital cluster in the FL most of this information can be displayed in the cluster.

I find that if I tilt my head very slightly, I can see the HUD perfectly, even with polarized glasses. Which makes me wonder why MB didn't just rotate the HUD slightly, and then counter-correct the projected image. Maybe I'm not thinking of this in the correct way.

In any case, I also love my HUD, and I'm really glad I ordered it, even if it is less than perfect with polarized lenses.

Yes, polarized sunglasses filter horizontal light, so if you tilt your head 90 degrees it filters vertical light instead. The more you tilt your head, the fewer horizontal light gets filtered. The HUD can't be turned around. A windshield because of the angles and surface reflects all light horizontally. No matter how the light is polarized in the first place. It's physically impossible to make a HUD work with polarized sunglasses. HUDs are most likely going away in not too distant future in favor of transparent displays integrated into the windshield. It's sort of like the tube TV technology at the moment. The principal is flawed because it relies on light reflection and so it gets mixed in with all the glare from the windshield.

Even without sunglasses I’ve seen my hud fade in and out.

Yeah, when I first looked at the track-day pictures taken by the facility's photographer, it took me a bit to realize that he was using a polarized filter on his camera -- looks pretty bad around the passenger-side front headlight (Moiré pattern effect, I assume):
