Up until September 2018, Apple CarPlay was largely crap to be honest, so depending on when you tried it I can totally understand it. As it goes with Apple, back then the platform was largely restricted to Apple's own native apps and only open to third-party Media and Messaging apps, which I don't care for. For navigation, the only option was Apple Maps, which I never use. But with iOS 12, Apple finally opened the platform up to more third-party apps, especially third-party navigation apps, and Google followed up by adding support for it to Google Maps and Waze. That's really the only reason I care about Apple CarPlay now and I'm glad the 2019 has it standard. I couldn't care less that my previous car didn't support it. Depending on where I'm going and/or if it's more convenient, I use Google Maps or Waze for navigation instead of the built-in navigation and it's nice to have it on the car's screen and integrated. iOS 13 got some more nice improvements to the platform and now you can even use Siri to start Google Maps and Waze navigation via voice command, which previously was another restriction of the platform that limited its usefulness.
