question in regards to garage kept Vs. not garage kept.

Hello all,

i recently moved from my parents house which i was staying with my fiancée (now wife) until we found a place of our own. we moved into our own space which is literally a 3 minute drive from where we were before... downside to our new place, no garage.. just a driveway.

i picked up my 2020 c63S coupe about 3 weeks ago and have been driving to my parents, taking the car out, then putting it back in the garage before going back home. this is starting to get pretty annoying and i have been leaving the car in my driveway unless i know it’ll rain and i won’t take it out for a few days i’ll leave it in the garage.

does anyone have their car out full time and not in a garage? does it make a difference?

i live in NYC, so obviously if there is snow or anything else troublesome for that matter, car will definitely not be left outdoors.

I'm across the city in Bergen County. I leave my car outside the garage half the time. Our climate temps are not extreme enough to worry about any issues other than minor issues such as battery drainage. I only leave my car outside in the rain to get the salt dust rinsed off from time to time.

You'll be fine. I've had my 2006 ML350 outside for going on three years. I live in a desert climate. All I do is keep a folding sunshade on the windshield in the summer and that's it. This was it all detailed up as I was going to sell it but decided to keep it. Most people (average person) think it's only a couple years old. Plus you have 4 years of warranty if anything happened to the paint/interior because of the elements. Btw I have a roll of that plastic film the dealers use and love it. Use it on my floor mats all the time. I get it from Amazon in case you are interested.

Mine lives in my driveway. I’m in SoCal and cover it overnight sometimes but it definitely needs more frequent detailing because it is outside. I just don’t have room in my garage. My wife’s CLS gets garage parking along with my Ducati so unfortunately my C63 sleeps in our driveway.

My car is outside (behind the house) 2407365 for the past 2 yrs, if you were to see it you would think it's garaged. It has survived all the weather in NYC without issues, as well as my other cars. Now for my civic parked on the street, that's a different story, lol.

I think only if you were keeping the car very long term, maybe 6 years or more, then you might start noticing a slight difference due to UV and if your area gets any dirty/acid rain

Obviously weather dependent in your area as well. Not sure if NY gets hail or not. We got battered with baseball sized hail in Dallas recently, which is not uncommon in TX. Local Audi dealer totaled over $10mm inventory. Lots of brand new RS5's were on that lot

When your car is outdoors I would worry more about breakin damage and theft more than weather.

We have lived in our house for twenty years and never had a car broken into. I’ve left my car unlocked overnight with my cell phone and sunglasses on the passenger seat. Never had any problems with theft.

I want my AMG in the garage at home and work. It is at home but at work we just have covered parking but in Arizona the sun will ruin the interior even though I have my windows ceramic tinted and use a sunblock shield.

I also have my paint protected with Ceramic Pro but all in all I would much rather have my AMG inside when not driving it. Just my 2 cents

I'm going on 12 years of having my cars only parked outside, with an avg ownership period of 4 years and none of those cars were bought brand new, so they had some years to them and I kept them cleaner than most people that garage cars. If you keep a car outside 6 years vs a garage kept 6 years there's a difference, but regular washes, waxes, and now ceramic coatings go a long way at preserving most items. The biggest annoyance is doing those things more often since you're exposed to the elements.

Put it this way, I was more annoyed having my motorcycle outside than my car - You'll be fine

That' true...with CP and other products now a days I would agree and when I think about it by having it in the garage not exposed to all elements it does cut down on my detailing time as compared to if it were outside...makes sense.

You're okay mate. I keep my C63s Coupe in the driveway all the time as it's my daily and use it to jump in and go.

In Australia we have regular 40 degree summer days (104 degrees fahrenheit).
If we're forecasting storms and I'm at home i'll cover it with a hail proof cover but apart from that, she is outside and handles the sun and weather very well.

Don't sweat it, it'll be fine

with the addition of my C63s something had to get moved outside so my 15 GL350 was treated with CeramicPro and now lives in the driveway - say goodbye to big details - just need to wash it regularly and maintain the shine and cleans up much easier. I am pretty **** about my cars so look for a detail/car wash that has a membership - i take my car in weekly for a hand wash (weather permitting) to keep airborne sap or just debris off the SUV. Treated the C & E to a lesser paint protection since they spend time in the garage and have a parking garage at the office too.

I used to park my previous cars outside in NYC weather and the main issue is the bird poops 💩 plus the winter cold weather, can leave permanent stains on the paint if left for a day or two. So if you're going to leave it out, you got to wash regularly. You could wrap it as others mentioned. I am not sure but wraps need to be removed after like 6 years or something like that. I've seen videos of paint coming off with the wrap so got to make sure professionals unwrap.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm thinking of selling my house in 2020 and finally getting a garage to cut back on those weekly washes!

Unfortunately I'm not in a parking garage at work so back outside it would stay for half the day....I think the biggest issue people saw with cars left outdoors from years back was all the rubber grommets, seals, trim pieces (like on the roof or around glass) crack from sitting outside for years and years. I imagine those materials are a lot better today than in the 80's or 90's. But a lot of it falls back on care

Yes, my previous car a 2016 Audi A7 I parked on the street (NYC) included overnight maybe 3 times a week for 3 years. With bird crap, taxi passengers fling open doors, other parked car right on my bumper and getting pelted with Sanitation salt It show the results. When I purchased my 2019 C63S coupe in April I got the monthly fee in an inside heated garage on the same block. The attendants keep the car on the first level and not up that ramp where anything can happen. I purchased the Bumper Blockers meant for indoor parking and they are great. They wrap around the bumpers. For me, so much less worry then leaving it out in the street.

Good luck with finding a house with a garage...I cannot ever imagine living again without one.

My issue is more of how **** I am about driving a nice car that is dirty...no seriously I have a problem...LOL
I detail mine (waterless wash & wax) at least twice a week...and sometimes detail my wheels three times due to all the stupid brake dust. But that's me.

And here is another garage advantage (for me)...it is currently raining outside (rare for AZ) and I am hoping it lets up later and dries up so I can go to a Cars & Coffee tomorrow morning.
So with having a garage I was able to get up this morning and detailed the entire car...I am WFH today so don't mind it sitting there all day staying clean.
