what is the function of this rubber strip? I have just found mine has also been damaged.... is it necessary to replace it? What function does it perform?

She has a little beater (Mazda 2) for the school run and general running about, only uses the merc for longer trips and going out with the kids to church, parties etc. Got it booked in for a service next week, so will get it fixed at the same time.
I'll get her Mazda traded up for something better this summer, so she won't need to use it!
