Buying CEL branded title c63
Since the beginning of the c63AMG, they have been a “dream car” of sorts for me and I’ve always looked forward to owning one some day.
I know this has been covered in post before regarding salvaged/rebuilt title cars but, in my searches they are all based upon wrecked and water damaged vehicles. The car I’m currently looking at is a 2017 c63 with 20k miles that was returned to Mercedes due to persistent CEL, which I know was a problem previously with software in these cars and then fixed by Mercedes which obviously is what has happened here and resulted with the branded title. Looks like it was returned at 11k miles and shipped to HQ in NJ. Fixed by Mercedes and driven for roughly 8k miles then sold at auction.
currently I own a 2015 BMW M235i 6spd manual trans that is flashed tuned and full of bolt on’s for my daily driver which is a phenomenal car but can get a little noisy and annoying while commuting with traffic with it being a heavily modded car with a manual transmission and not the greatest daily driving car now. I’m really just looking for the second “comfort” commuter car.
My commute to an from work is less than 20 miles round trip through town and interstate and I only work 4 days a week. I typically put 5-7k miles on a car a year so I kind of baby my cars. what I’m looking for is a C63 to have as my second car to use for a fun commuter to go to an from work and weekend trips and keep the BMW for all the modding and track stuff, no plans to mod the c63 as I really just want the comfort and sound with the ability to still GO. I have always done my own work on all of my vehicles, from oil changes and brakes to turbo swaps and clutches, you name it and I like doing it so, owning a vehicle out of warranty isn’t a big deal to me. A car like this I would still look to have serviced by a dealer.
Both cars I plan on keeping for long term, if any car in the future would go it would be the BMW. I’m looking for anyone who may have experience with owning a branded title C63 now or prior that might chime in with any input of headaches if any, that you’ve run into with owning a such branded titled car, mechanical, insurance or with dealer service visits. Etc.
Thanks!

I don’t think you guys quite get the idea when I say “modified” bolt on’s. Ohlins track suspension Coilovers. E85 for fueling as well as upgraded Pure2 turbo, as well as a lot in between. The m235i is my glorified track/street car that I’ve slowly built over the last 5 years. I would like to keep the BMW track focused an more track orientated without the guilt of driving it on the street. The BMW will likely be for sale at some in the future as I see myself slowly moving away from that side of things and would like to try and focus on some of the other important things in life.
Let’s face it, Mercedes isn’t meant to be a modded car, as much as people DO mod them by nature. There’s plenty of reason these cars do not do it reliably or fare well on track days without SOMETHING popping up. Usually misfires it seems once the excessive heat from excessive hard driving, seen it at the track more times than I care to mention, it’s usually an old man or a young gun just out flogging the hell out of it but hey, to each their own!
lets not forget this is all hypothetical as this thread isn’t made with my intention of going and buying such a titled car, this is simply for my own interest to see if many or if anybody in this forum HAS purchased one of these vehicle’s before, it seems like there certainly is a lot of them listed over my year or so of my on and off searching for the proper used one.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
I have seen that car, it is very nice.
the vehicle I looked at was a trade in at a local dealer a friend of mine works, it isn’t listed online as far as I have been able to tell. It will likely end up at auction.
what I mean by modified with bolt on’s, my M235i has track orientated coilover suspension, pure2 upgraded turbo, e85 for fueling, and a lot in between. it’s essentially a track car I use semi daily, a c63 is not harsh to me by any means.
this thread is not based on ME going and BUYING a branded title car. I am seeking people’s input, anyone who might have done it themselves. Their, experience, their pitfalls. If any. It does not seem like it’s been covered much in this forum and in my year+ now of searching for the perfect car as I’m very picky, I have seen ALOT of salvaged titled base and S model C63’s listed and sell over that period of time with branded titles. All range from CEL to squeaky brakes.
of all those sold, SOMEBODY ON HERE HAS TO HAVE ONE. Granted I get there is a social frowning upon these sort of things so I’m sure a lot or most won’t want to chime in an say they own and drive a branded title Mercedes out of embarrassment. However I see no shame in it if you have the ability to care for it yourself, just like any car owner out of a warranty would have to do.

S4s are worlds better than any comparable BMW in that class.
You should just go buy a cheap F80 M3/4, those have depreciated a lot more and are probably more in your price range and smarter buy than a salvage title W205 C63...

Judging by your post of you buying into USED cars just like I’m looking into doing, you can't afford any more than me

My only problem is that I bought the suv two month before the covid19 pandemic so now my C63 and my commuter are parked. Oh well, I still have a job so I’m saving gas and mileage on both of my cars. The thing is, I’m still choosing the suv for most of my driving needs.

short answer is, I drive my cars. Regardless what it is.
the BMW will end up being my dedicated autoX and driving course fun car. My wife has her Lexus GS that we use also. I got tired of having the BMW and my NC3 Miata as well as her car that the BMW started sitting as I enjoyed the Miata for commuting at the time until the power bug bit and I decided to start modding the BMW and the NC3 Miata started to be the car sitting. But, with everything I’ve done in the last 6 months the BMW is just ready to be the side car again with the upgraded turbo and E85.
I like to enjoy what ever it is I’m driving and as long as I’ve wanted a c63, I think now is finally the time and I want to be able to enjoy it daily. Hopefully I’ll find a lower mileage 2017 or 2018. May settle for a 2016 if the miles are right.

I guess my point is that I’ve done the daily commute in a C63 and it was enough that I decided to buy a more economical and comfortable vehicle to serve that purpose and just use the C63 more sparingly. I love my C63 but it isn’t a great car to drive everyday over crap roads.

Getting a buyback title car should have no impact on warranty (should have a bit left) or insurance but may on financing.
Make sure to do a PPI to be safe as the warranty can’t be extended.
thank for the useful information!

how many miles and what mods exactly?
How many miles with said mods?
Is your car daily driven? Used on the weekends? If so, how many miles a week/year?
how many long distance road trips have you taken with the car while modded?
do you track it at all? AutoX or straight line? If so, how often?
the reality is, there is a reason this thread alone is FILLED with ppl trying to convince me that daily driving one of these cars is a bad idea. Any idea as to why other than I guess the car they bought is too harsh a ride to deal with daily or too expensive to risk driving daily? I don’t see it that way but apparently, others do.
I have seen plenty of these cars at track events that end up parked, from stock to high horsepower modded to the gills. Of course there will always be the few who are lucky enough they don’t get struck with the bad luck and their cars just keep going, nature of the game.
sorry if this has struck a sour note with you but, all genuine questions. I am actively searching for hopefully an S model to avoid the itch to mod with at least a tune to make up for the lack in power in a base model.
