Ceramic Coated Wheels

Question to those that have ceramic coated their wheels. Does it really allow you to wash of the brake dust/oxidation with just water on the matte black amg wheels? By water I dont just mean out of a hose, I'm assuming using a pressure washer or a touchless car wash.

I've already switched to Porterfields on the back, but I'd like to know if ceramic coating makes a big difference before paying for it. I currently use Sonax which works ok, but if I can clean them with just water that would be great.

Brake dust still sticks but comes off easier. I still need a brush, but mostly (in my case) to keep the inner barrel clean, which is pain either way. (Switched from AMG wheels to aftermarket two piece).

Agreed. A bit better but nowhere near a panacea - the wheels still take a lot of time and patience to clean.

As the others have stated, it helps. The thing it helps with the most is the flatter surfaces of the wheels. They will get pretty clean with the use of a pressure washer, but the corners where the spokes meet the wheel barrel will still take a little work.

I tried EBC red stuff and Porterfield...all the same and not different than OEM. Just what it is.

Been running with ceramic coated wheels for two years on our MX-5. If it has made any difference, I am not sure. Still have to clean them with a brush.

Do it anyway - your wheels will be better protected. Just got to clean the brake dust off. Thats one reason I did not pick a wheel design with too many spokes and details ...pain to keep clean.

,
It helps. Still need a contact wash though. The crevices and corners won't clean with just a pressure water and soap.

I love the OEM forged wheels but man are they a pain to keep clean. I wash them once a week with soapy water, rinse and dry. I apply wax every couple months just to make cleaning them easier. I probably spend about an hour a week cleaning the wheels.

I either wash my car myself or take it to a full service hand wash car wash but they do a **** job on the wheels so I have to clean them separately after I get home.

Will ceramic coating stop our lass from scraping them along the kerb!🙈

Looks like my plan of using a wheel sealer is out the window then, as are different brake pads of they're all the same

anyone tried Ceramic brake pads like the Powerstop Z16? Brakes similarly to stock, but more importantly much less dust!

been on them for a year now.......
for a start, no more dedicated washing of wheels! at most you get a very thin layer of light colored brake dust....
you can search for them @ RockAuto or CarPartsDiscount.com

For what it’s worth: I have ceramic coated wheels and use EBC red stuff in front and porter field on rear. The rear has much less dust but the brake dust there is much harder to get off. The front EBC are just as dusty as OEM but comes off pretty easy.

Getting my car ceramic coated this week and debating applying to the wheels, calipers, and windows. From this thread and what I've heard elsewhere it seems that ceramic coating those parts helps a bit, but isn't a huge improvement with the cleaning process. So I'd probably lean towards saving a little money and not doing those parts. However, the installer is a friend and he's giving me his typical "paint only" pricing to do the paint + wheels, calipers, and windows. So I kind of feel bad saying no thanks just give me a cheaper price on the paint only.

In the meantime, just curious of anyone else's thoughts on the effectiveness on wheels, calipers, and windows.

The ceramic coating is not just for helping with brake dust cleaning but also to protect your wheels in general (debris, scratches, salt, street dirt). So, if you drop a few grand on a nice set of aftermarket wheels it makes a lot of sense. However, its best applied when the wheels are new and can be applied all around including the inner barrel. Many shops don't even touch mounted wheels. Never heard someone doing windows though...not even sure why you would do windows?
PS: my red calipers come clean just fine w/o any coating.

Yeah, coating the windows (and calipers and wheels (they're 4 years old stock 19" twin spokes)) seems superfluous to me. I'm probably gonna see if my buddy will just cut me a little discount on doing paint-only rather than "throwing in" the windows, wheels, and calipers.

FWIW, here's something on coating windows: https://www.drbeasleys.com/blog/2018...vehicle-glass/

I would venture its easier and probably more effective for regular use to use over the counter glass cleaner spray with similar "serum" included to repel water and have better visibility. Never had an issue cleaning my windows.

What ceramic coatings are you guys using? I was looking into getting some polished wheels coated with Cerakote MC-5100: https://www.cerakote.com/shop/cerako...clear-aluminum. Apparently it holds up even better than powedercoating...
