Leather Airbag cover

Just installed the Carbontastic leather Airbag cover and wow! It’s the little things that really add to the luxury feel of the car.

I've always wanted to do this as well however in the back of my mind, I am afraid what if the micro seams were not manufactured correctly and when the airbag goes off, it doesn't tear right.

They use the OEM cover. I guess let’s just hope for the best....

Think someone else mentioned changing the brushed nickel to a kinda gloss black. Looks like 'black chrome' to me... There were pics(?) and comments for both ways.

Q: How can I link one thread to another rather than a cut-and-paste? Thanks in advance.

looks great! I can’t believe this is not offered through MB. Not even on E class or GLE.

OEM leather wrapped and stitched airbag covers are available - you just need to look in the right place. The S63 has a leather airbag cover that fits, as do some W205 models.

Do a search on google for “leather airbag cover w205” and you will see there are a variety of OEM options with different color stitching (black, grey, etc). No need to go custom when you can buy the OEM part.

Also, I’m not sure I’d trust any aftermarket solution. We’re talking about airbag deployment and if an aftermarket cover fails for whatever reason (stitching too tight or material doesn’t burst). I doubt aftermarket guys are testing their work by exploding airbags through their stitched leather.

I bought mine through Carbontastic and I believe the use OEM and then customize.

I am not overly concerned with stitching being too tight as the forces generated when Airbag goes off won’t have anywhere to go but outwards.

can you get just the trim by itself? I thought you had to replace the whole steering wheel...

They do not use "OEM" Mercedes Benz Airbag tested Leather ON TOP off the plastic airbag cover. The OEM leather airbag covers are tested by MBENZ specifically for deployment

Who sells OEM leather? I didn’t see any OEM with red stitching. I think we’re making a big deal about nothing. Have you seen the kind of force generated when airbag goes off? I guess only one way to find out which I hope I never will. Been driving for 20 plus years and haven’t had a single Airbag go off..... knocks on wood......

That includes the airbag. I am guessing that’s how OEM sells them.

This looks great! I am gonna add this to to-do list.
How was the install? Is it pretty easy?

Any chance you have any recommendations on airbag cover removal?

It is more than likely illegal to do that due to safety .... it reads "No modification including repairs are allowed to any airbag system or parts" ... it may prevent deployment of the airbag in a collision but it does look good though
