Night pack trim loss of black gloss shine

Hi fellow MB owners!

I have a 2019 AMG C63S Coupe with 11,000 miles on the clock.

On the drivers side the night pack trim (the gloss black trim that runs along the bottom) has lost its shine right by the drivers door.

Has anyone experienced this?

MB UK are refusing to fix it as a warranty claim saying its caused by external factors, which just seems ridiculous to me.

Not the customer service I was expecting for an £80k car 😞

pictures below although its hard to make it show up in a photo.

From what I see, it gives the impression it's dull from wear and tear from your leg and whatever you had on your leg at the time, such as denim or something as coarse. It's simply worn. I might suggest to see if MB will warranty it for you.

The car is 15 months old!!

Wear and tear from denim? Really?

MB UK have already so no to the warranty.

hard to see due to the gravel background but could be a problem with clear coat (either not done right or damaged by something aggressive like salt?). If MB does not want to fix - comes down to your SA - easiest fix is to just repaint it. Should be not too expensive but recommend to remove to paint and not on car (overspray).

Could be, I was wondering if it’s maybe heat related as the driver front (UK) tyre always gets hotter so maybe more heat down that side of the car?

The black trim looks nice but if its all going to go dull like that all round the car its going to look terrible.

I’m just shocked MBUK said no to the claim, the local dealership are going to try to polish it out so hopefully that will work.

doubt it’s heat related... way too far from any heat source and I am in Florida and drive “sporty” and no such discoloration.

This isn't a painted part so don't paint it. Plastic polish is sold for this kind of problem. (Google/ebay) It comes in different buffing strengths. Start with a medium and follow up with a fine grade. You may have to go with coarse if its very dull. Just like rubbing compound but for plastic. i have a 1957 MGA with an acrylic racing windscreen. Every so often I use it to remove scratches on the windscreen. With the fine grade polish its nearly as scratch free and clear as glass. With a little buffing effort and a rag you'll have a new looking part for less than $30. You may want to use a cleaner wax to finish it off. A cleaner wax has a small amout of buffing agent in it.

Yes its definitely black plastic.

Mercedes warranty won't replace it but my local dealership are going to try to polish it out.

This happens from your leg or others, dragging, or rubbing against in when you get in and out.. Mainly if denim, or a scratchier fabric. (as others have said) Same will happen to your seats if you have the performance seats, and scoot your bum across the sides

Could be wear and tear, It is a plastic part and it is clear coated, so that could be peeling. A new one is $145 bucks, but you have to remove rocker molding to replace, when that happens 4 of the clips will break and need to be replaced as well. So if you have a body shop do it for you instead of the dealer, you will likely be out $350 with labor and clips included.

Can' really tell from the pics, but if OP says the paint is altered I tend to believe.......what's lame is the dealers attitude about the warranty......why so unreasonable?? Is there a different dealer you can visit? GL!

It could be similar to what I have. They refused to warranty this.

Gonna try claybar as I think it may have been a sprinkler I park next to that may have left some deep stains over time.

While this is the only fading to this extent, the black gloss all over the rest of my car definitely looks far from how it did day 1. I also have a 2019 coupe with about 12,000 miles on it.

Not sure what is going on but my gloss black looks like day 1 (2018, Florida sun). I did apply the MB permacoat when I purchased it, regular treat it and now had another ceramic coat applied but looks like new. Attached original black in night package vs freshly painted black on lip

But that isn't a factory piece right?

Also, you've done a couple things to maintain it well, but just because we didn't doesn't mean pieces should degrade so much after just 1 year.

the middle pieces are all OEM and only lower lip was added. That was my point, you can’t see the difference and whatever is going on with yours that’s not normal. Should not do that that quickly.

Depending on location, sprinkler water is some of the worst stuff on the planet.. it NON POTABLE (non drinkable) and even at my house in Las Vegas, the private community uses refuge water (toilet, waste) to water thje golf course, and such...

So. that water could and probably did have caustic material in it, and that def would cause that type of discoloring...

Well the OEM pieces you have are all fine/not faded on mine either. Its the lower lip.

Either way, I agree. After a year, regardless of what one does to protect these pieces, fading shouldn’t happen.

That’s what I’m thinking.

I’ll try using a claybar.

So at least lm not alone!!! Although I’m not sure what you mean by sprinkler water, is that non drinkable stuff not from the main supply? We don’t have that (guess vegas is the desert!!) so I only use tap water to wash it with.

I didn’t get any ceramic coating or anything like that but I did get StarGuard protection applied by the dealership when I purchased it, which reminds me I think that was supposed to give me some extra insurance.

I would be surprised if its caused by clothes rubbing as it feels coarse to touch, I think it just defective and worn away from air / grit when driving then maybe? Either way it shouldn’t do it. You might expect it on an old cheap car but not on an AMG. I think its not fit for purpose. Quite suprising just to have cheap plastic stuck on like that 😜 I think the part is £77, that why I’m so surprised they won’t do it under warranty. Its going to cost the dealership more than that in labour to polish it out surely?

God forbid anything major goes wrong as I have no faith that the warranty is worth anything now.

It’s been t-cut ( polishing compound) and created a hazy finish. I think you’ll find someone has tried to polish out scratches caused by people getting in and out which is common on the wider skirts. As stated it’s not painted, gloss plastic. I know this as I’ve done it myself and ended up with a similar finish. A detailer may be able to sort it out. It’s not a fault of the Oem plastic hence dealer won’t replace it. Side skirt is more than £77 also.

It hasn’t been t cut, I’m the only owner from new (27th April 2019) and I have never noticed any scratches, the dullness just appeared over time and as I say the whole area appears worn away and coarse to touch.
