rear fog lamps....

hey legends,

Random question, I'm based in Sydney Australia (RHD), have a 2016 C63s Estate. I wanted to know about the rear fog lamps and when activated, are both sides of the rear lights (left and right side) meant to come on? I activated mine for the first time not long ago as got caught up in horrendous rain and fog on the motorway (to the point some people had their hazards on). I'm curious as to when I got home, I wondered what actually got turned on (being the car you never see it) and it seems it was just a brighter light illuminated from the right-hand side brake light but are both left and right meant to be on or just the driver side? Thanks in advance...

What did you find in the owners manual?

Nothing other than what they are good for (being fog lamps) but doesn't say if both are to come on or only the driver side, hence me asking here in the forum. The manual was the first thing I picked up to check, obviously....

Never understood why one rear fog, wouldn't both lights on mean greater visibility. Our auto sensing front fog lamps appear to be a joke. Living in a region where thick fog is common I find the effect of the front fogs negligible.

Is yours the ILS headlights? Yeah I hate only having one rear fog light, too. It looks shiit 😑

Looks wasnt in the books when they came up with the logic.. :-)

"Some cars are designed with one or two rear fog lights. However, only the light on the driver's side is turned on to avoid confusion with brake lights. If road visibility is extremely poor and your car doesn't have rear fog lights, a driver behind you may not be able to see your car until it's too late."

I have the FL sedan c63, I went in for this to talk with an SA about this and they too explained the logic: that if both were turned on, it would look like brake lights. You'll have reflectors on both sides for symmetry, but mine should only have 1 that lights up

Not sure about the fronts, but are you confirming it is only one drive side rear that lights up when activated?

so my question was, is there only meant to be one rear? I'm assuming you mean yes with your answer?

Yes only meant to be one in the rear.
