Back to American Muscle

Just wanted to let my EX-AMG friends know I have gone back to American Muscle.
Traded the AMG for this gorgeous 2019 ZL1 (6 speed manual) with 7k miles.
I will miss our AMG conversations. So stay safe and I know you will continue to enjoy your German muscle cars!!!

I just went the other way. I traded a 2018 ZL1 A10 on my 2019 CLS 450. You have a wonderful beast. Change out the brake fluid to Motul RBF 600 and take her to the track. If the car is stock, the warranty is still good. Camaro6.com is a great place for some information. Al O doesn't hang out there, as much. However, there are still some of the original design team do chime in from time to time. Did yours have the PDR?

I hope you enjoy! That ZL1 is a great car, and a large part of me wanted to go that way when buying my C63s coupe. Two things stopped me - the gun-slit cabin/window profile which kills visibility and the miniscule trunk. Mechanically the car is amazing - great powertrain, GM does an amazing job with ride/handling balance, helped by the magnetic ride control shocks, etc. Same for CTS-V, but couldn't get over CUE and the interior......

Actually, the trunk isn't small. The opening to get things into the trunk is small. You can put a lot of small bags into the trunk. Just not any large bags, unless you go in through the cabin with the rear seats down.

The visibility is something you get used to. The electronics are very good (rear camera, cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and in 2019 forward forward collision avoidance). On the track, it is hard to explain how good these cars are. They are very balanced, predictable and have extremely high limits. 650 pound feet of torque is just a kick in the pants.

Congrats to ya! Years ago before I got my CLS I was considering one of these. Does it have the 305 size rubber on all 4 corners?

The ZL1 has 20" - 305 on the rear and 20" - 285 on the front. The ZL1 1LE (ZLE in ZL1 parlance) has 19" - 325 on the rear and 19" - 305 on the front. The regular ZL1 runs a GY SC3 tire. The ZLE runs a GY SC3-R tire. The R tires are street slicks. They are super sticky. They are rated as equal to or sometimes better than the Michelin PSC2. The staggered setup promotes a bit of understeer. A track alignment sets things a bit more neutral. With something over 500 pound feet of torque available at just off idle, a bit of understeer may keep someone out of the woods.

I remember test driving the ZL1 six speed and there was this weird initial delay when taking off in first gear. I couldn’t pin point it then I found this huge thread on camaro forums pretty much saying the same thing. Have they fixed this issue?

I almost bought a ZL1 1LE but that was a deal breaker and there was no fix either as it was a software causing the issue.

The bog is still there. There is a launch technique that side steps it, but it requires a good bit of practice to master. However, the NLS (No Lift Shifting) is a trip. The auto rev-match is very good, too. Much better than I was. My 2016 Camaro SS had the TR-6060 manual. My 2018 ZL1 had the 10L90 (rated at 900 pound feet) automatic.
