Question about the secondary cat delete

So I have the AWE track exhaust. Love it, but was looking forward to upgrading the sound now that I’ve had it on for about 2 years. Had the car up on the lift at a shop to do a secondary cat delete but they said it was already gone with the new exhaust. Was not expecting that. So my question is does the track exhaust already remove the secondary cats? I didn’t know that.

AWE track exhaust is basically straight pipes from the DP's back...

Thanks, learned that the hard way but just wanted to make sure. Damn, was looking forward to upgrading the sound without going the downpipes/tune/gasoline smell route.

How much more sound you need ? have you let someone else drive your car past you, and or near you ??

You are definitely out of the MB engine sound at this point.. just will be loud exhaust sound per say..

Respectfully disagree. The car sounds amazing and not fart-canny at all. Should have come this way from factory.

No probs bro.. wasnt making the statement in a "downing" manner .. :-) its all good... I mean the AMG thump etc. .gets pushed out..

The name of the game, is for you to like it, and screw everyone else's perception, its your car :-) but man.. just has to be a loud one...
I have AWE Switchpath, and on a stage 2 with this and that, but all Cats are intact and its loud AF..

:-)

If you have the awe track exhaust you DO still have all four cats, unless a previous owner did a secondary cat delete. The awe track starts after the cats but before the h pipe, hence "catback exhaust".
I had a shop make me an awe track type setup (as mentioned is really only straight pipe stepped up to 3 inch) and also did secondary delete at same time. It sounded good and was fairly loud at idle and low rpm, but it almost seemed to get quieter/ not as loud as I wanted under throttle & WOT, so I ended up putting my stock exhaust back on and went catless downpipes. I'm finally happy with how it sounds. To get these cars to make some noise under load, you really need to do catless downpipes. I think even a high flow catted downpipe setup would also almost be as loud.

Now I’m definitely confused. They had it up on the lifts and showed me where the cats should have been and weren’t there. I’m the only owner and the only mod I’ve done on it was the track exhaust. Are the second cats super close to the engine bay or something?

I marked location of secondary cats in the pic below.
Primary cats are located right next to turbo in engine bay area.

Ahhh I definitely see them now. Yeah the first shop I went to didn’t know what they were doing. Went to a performance muffler shop and they’ve got me scheduled to get it done tomorrow 👍

I ran into the same issue, lots of places won’t touch cat deletes. One of the shop owners directed me toward this muffler shop I had previously called however and said that’s weird because he got his done there last year. So a lightbulb went off and I drove there and asked in person. Voila, getting it removed tomorrow. So I think it’s just a liability thing, they won’t say they do over the phone but they will in person.

Aw I see. That could be it. Well post a sound clip when you get it done. I want to hear it.

Done and done. Guys this thing sounds unreal. Great idle, no drone, amazing pops and burbles. And best of all no CEL or tune needed. It’s finally perfect.

Here in Australia tuners won't mention on their tune posts or invoices that their downpipes are catless or they do 2nd cat deletes mainly for liability but they do do it if you ask and pay them!

Nice deep sound. oh also I noticed yours is PFL so you should have better sound than FL.
I'm hearing this new EPA thing going on makes it harder for people to get second cat delete.

Lol I didn't figure a shop could be that inept so I went with assuming it was a second owner.

Yeah I went from a few burbles/pops/bangs even with the AWE track exhaust to a tasteful amount with the delete. Was scared of getting the trashy machine gun pops but luckily didn't.

Hey I'm thinking about getting the awe track exhaust but its basically a straight pipe. I occasionally drive between cities (4 hour drive) and I was wondering how is the drone on the highway? I just don't want to get a headache when driving on the highway cruising at 2.5k rpm

I didn’t have any drone with just my AWE. Even with the secondary cat delete I still don’t notice any. It’s a great exhaust, highly recommend it.
