Facelift residuals

So with the next 63 being a 4 pot hybrid, will our cars actually hold a bit of value, the last V8 63, end of an era. I'm sure the next car will be very fast and high tech, I'd probably love it, but you can't replicate a V8 no matter how much you try. A straight or V6 might have been a credible alternative ala F80 M3, but a 4 banger is just losing the plot.

The old M140i has done pretty well since BMW released their 4 pot M135i.

So what do we think? We can revisit as time goes by. For me I think they will hold pretty good, the W204's are holding steady around 15-30k in the UK, so that will prop up the bottom. Sheds will probably be in the 25's, but later models with good spec will hold in the 40's at least. Certainly better than times gone by.

Just for fun. None of us have crystal *****, but we all have an opinion.

Generally speaking, luxury cars are a horrible “investment” and I put that in quotes simply because cars, for the most part, are not investments, they are depreciating assets. Anyway, I certainly wouldn’t buy a C63 expecting it to hold its value let alone increase in value. If I were a betting man, I would bet they continue to depreciate about like any other used luxury car.

My guess is that it will hold its value a lot better as a last of its kind. Naturally there will always be depreciation, my understanding is you are talking about by how much till it levels off.

Kind of a moot point. The more you use it and the more time passes the more it loses value. If you have a loan it is a matter of how soon until you aren’t upside down in it and if you paid cash it really doesn’t matter at all as you have already lost the opportunity to invest that money elsewhere.

Nobody is buying these cars as an investment so this kind of speculation is pointless.

I don’t think the OP mentioned investment. Neither did I.

I truly believe that the rate of depreciation will drop significantly once the new model is released. Same thing happened to E92 V8 M3. Mint condition ones are selling for the same price I sold mine for back in 2014 when it was only a year old.

No matter how you cut it, 4 cyl C63 just is not very appetizing. I would've seriously considered if they had built an AMG version of their i6 engines to go head to head with new M3/M4.

Not sure where investment came from, I think that's a stretch. Historically these cars have always faced steep depreciation but the move to a 4 pot undermines the ethos of this car, no one ever bought it for its handling or fuel economy, 99% of us bought it for its sonorous thumping V8. The facelift represents the peak of the V8 C63. Whilst I believe it will depreciate, I think it will be much slower that what we've come to expect.

Even W204's are creeping up, much like 996's have propped up 997's and the 6cyl M140i has retained value and we all know how BMW's depreciate.

The w206 will be a completely different prospect, and anyone thinking of buying one won't do so for the engine.

No one should buy one as an investment though!

I frequently check Autotrader and Cargurus for the prices of used W205 C63. Been doing this for the last several years. In the last few months there seems to be very little depreciation, and in some cases slight appreciation to the prices. The C63S coupe appears to have the least depreciation. I bought my 2018 C63S coupe used in 2019. Now +17,000 miles later it has depreciated $6000.

I think the current pricing is based more on the general shortage in the supply of used vehicles in the market while demand for them is high, more so than the upcoming 4-banger C63. The shortage in the availability of semiconductors causing a decrease in the supply of newer cars probably has something to do with it as well.
