Question Premature steering wheel 12o'clock marker wear

Was doing some interior cleaning yesterday and cleaned the steering wheel as I do about every 6-12 month. Had some schmutz on the 12o'clock marker, which after cleaning revealed wear underneath. Looks like the top layer is peeling off. Anybody else had this issue and how did you get it fixed? It might not look that way in this closeup, but the DINAMICA looks like new. Kinda ironic that the one piece of leather is what is showing wear after only 19k miles.

What did you clean it with?

I've seen a few replaced under warranty for different reasons but they are very stingy about it, and will treat it the same as any other trim concern, will try to not replace it for normal "wear and tear", although I agree the top layer peeling is abnormal, they may not. That piece looks like MB-Tex peeling, not real leather, it shouldn't do that.

I clean the DINAMICA with a microfiber towel soaked in slightly soapy water and then wringing it out until it's only slightly damp and then brush it afterwards with a toothbrush. The 12o'clock marker I clean with Adam's Polishes leather/interior cleaner I use for the rest of the interior and have used for years on other cars. This happened recently, because the schmutz that collected on it was a new discovery the other day.

I don't know what rig you've got but thats a good macro shot man

Same shiit happened to mine after a year. It wore away after a while and got the whole 12'Oclock strip done again for $200 AUD by a Mobile upholstery guy just to avoid mucking around and taking a day off to go to the dealer which I know they would have denied me a warranty claim due to "wear and tear".
Later on I switched to full NAPA leather steering wheel as I got tired of the alcantara.

As a temporary measure, cover it like the Porsche blokes do (here: 12 O Clock Marker Strip) and get it fixed whenever you have time.

That's taken with my iPhone XS at 2x optical zoom. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that. I've emailed my SA and I'll see what he says, but sounds like it's not a unique problem.

Quick update on this one. I had my car in to get the cracked taillight replaced and at the same time had them take a look at the 12o'clock marker. As others have said, unfortunately they blamed it on wear and tear. I tried to argue with them that I'm not even holding the steering wheel there, but no luck. They were going on the assumption of replacing the entire steering wheel, which I wasn't even expecting. They did give me a recommendation for an upholstery shop here that has lots of experience with Mercedes, so I'm gonna give them a shot. I can't completely rule out that it wasn't my doing, so I didn't press the issue too much. When I clean the DINAMICA I use a damp microfiber, and the 12o'clock marker tends to get wet and possibly that's what caused it to peel eventually. Once I have it fixed, I'm gonna have to rethink how I clean the steering wheel.

The only way a dealer can fix it is to replace the entire wheel, they don't sell pieces.

There are vey specific bulletins about warranty coverage for wear on steering wheels, and most dealers do not want the hit of a warranty claim denial on a $3k steering wheel.

Mine is doing the same, 2018 with 24,000 miles. It's always garaged and doesn't sit in the sun for any period of time.
