Shell Gas - Full Tank "Yellow Chck Engine Light"

1. Full Tank of P Gas , Shell station
2. 15min after driver off , Yellow "Check Engine" Light
3. Light has been on one day
=====================================
Car drives and performs like nothing is wrong.

Any ideas?

Note : I emailed my service advisor , nothing back yet

Same thing happened to me with Shell last year.
I topped it right up though, where it pretty much overflowed and apparently is not recommended.

It threw this code for me when I did it P2097 Post Catalyst fuel trim, bank 1 - TOO RICH. I cleared the code and it never came back.

Just scan the code and if it's the same as mine, clear it and give her a good thrash.

How do i clear the code ?
The dealership will have to clear it for me i assume , I have no scanning tool

Or does the light eventfully reset itself?

Nah you need to scan and clear it with a proper scanning tool or a OBD2 Bluetooth adapter and phone app.

I just have a cheap $10 OBD2 Bluetooth adapter from ebay and use Carista app for Android on my phone to scan for codes and clear. Been using it for 7 years now on all my cars and always leave the OBD2 Bluetooth adapter plugged in just in case these sh**ty codes ever happen when driving.

Just a couple of thoughts before you buy your own diagnostics adapter, although that's always a good idea.
  • Have you double-checked the fuel cap to make sure it's properly closed and sealed. This is the most common reason for the CEL to come on after refueling. There have also been instances where the cap failed and no longer sealed.
  • Was the fuel pumping slowly at this Shell station? If so, that's a sign the tanks are almost empty and you end up with sediments in your fill sucked up from the bottom of the tank.
  • In some areas, Premium fuel sells very slowly because of the lack of premium cars requiring it, so the fuel you are pumping is old. Fuel up at a station that sees lots of traffic and cars that require premium fuel
  • You can stop at any AutoZone or other car store and they'll read out the codes for you, so at least you know why the CEL is on. If it was bad fuel and you had misfire it should automatically clear after a certain number of miles and if the fuel cap is loose it should also clear on its own once you tightened it. If you smell fuel, because it's not sealing anymore, then you'll have to get it replaced first.

I randomly get cel sometimes after filling up or after a car wash and only once for no reason...car always felt fine when the cel lights up and always goes away by itself after 4 or 5 start cycles. Getting my car serviced tomorrow so will find out what exactly caused these random cel.

Prior to the creating this thread ...
1. I opened and closed the gas Cap
2. I do recall being fast at the pump after it was full.
3. Reached out to my SA

Note! I will always hit my SA before i do anything. I prepaid for Maintenance and I have a good relationships with them

On the Flip side , I wanted to ask my MBworld Fam as well .. .always good to get both sides.
besides I needed a scanner just in case.

Again thanks for the info

You always seem to research and know a lot about AMGs, what diagnostics adapter would you recommend? Since my mechanic lives next-door, I always borrow his but it would be nice to have an inexpensive one of my own.

I have Carly and Carista. Carly is faster because its OBD port adapter uses Wi-Fi, whereas the Carista adapter uses Bluetooth. Both are phone apps, so all you need is the respective adapter and the app. I have them both from my prior live w/ my Audis as these apps can also be used to make coding mods, but unfortunately with MB all they can do is read out codes. You need Star Diagnostics to make coding changes in MB vehicles. I believe for Carly you need an adapter that goes with the vehicle brand, or at least the proper license. I haven't tried it on my AMG as I haven't gotten a CEL yet, so my Carly may not work. Carista as far as I know can read codes from any vehicle, but may not support manufacturer specific codes, but a lot of the codes that cause the CEL are standardized.

Happened to my C63s too after filling up in MS when i was driving from NC to TX. Within 15mins of filling up and driving, CEL came on. It disappeared about 3-4 days later after I filled up a few more times and added octane booster. However, I took it to the dealership and they said it was some fuel vacuum pump? that malfunctioned. Either way I do remembering topping off when I filled up and that could have caused the issue....

Correction it was 76 gas :/ WTH was I thinking...like I said rushing
1. 15Min CEL on
==============================
2 days later CEL still on , I am purposely driving to burn the gas down.
==============================
A. Purchased a code reader , arrives today [ Will be fun seeing what tripped the CEL]
B. Anything serious , Its right off to the Dealer

Note! No Performance issues , Coupe drives like normal

Don't worry man just fill her up with some fresh fuel and you'll be all sorted 🙂

If anything, that CEL will probably clear itself before your scanner arrives.

Came back from service today and going back again tomorrow to get entire mbux updated and reinstalled which I was told is a 4 to 5 hour process. I had other small issues with the system but my SA said the random CEL was due to a buggy system lol...here's the most outrageous part...the digital dash was also part of the cel issue because of OTA signals my car was or wasn't receiving which mbux then sends to the dash...lol...but I always did have connection issues...sounds so made up

Yeah, it found no codes. They cleared on their own, pretty much as predicted. Probably was just a gulp of bad fuel that upset it for a moment, or the fuel cap was indeed not sealed the first time and when you checked it again it actually sealed.

Any top tier gas station is fine. 76 is top tier. I mainly fill at Shell, and Chevron is my backup. You wanna go to stations that are frequented fairly well, so there's a good turnover of the fuel in the tanks and you don't end up with old fuel. That's been working for me for years and those are actually the most common brands where I drive anyway, and I really like both their mobile apps. I'm done with sticking my credit card into the pump and rather handle the whole transaction from my phone before even getting out of the car and securely pay with Apple Pay. Then I just have to go out to insert the nozzle and select the grade. No touching those nasty keyboards entering zip code and almost filling out a survey before it finally starts pumping. My fuel rewards # etc. all gets electronically transmitted and I earn extra rewards by using the Shell app specifically.

Open the app on the phone, enter the pump number, authorize payment and then it's ready to go. Electronic receipt in the app afterwards.

I have to go to two different stations, 1 of my Ethanol and one for my 93. My only choice on E is Kroger and Murphy, neither are Top Tier. I go to Shell or Exxon/Mobile for the 93.

Nice! BTW, the app no longer generates a 3 digit code to enter at the pump. They stopped doing that at the beginning of the pandemic to make it even more touchless. Still have to touch the nozzle, but there is no way around that.
