(Pic) Why is there a plastic flap on our stock intake center duct?

Wanted to ask this question years ago...... Why is there a flap on the front of the air inlet here? Would it be better to leave it open at all times or is it actually functional for something?

Thx
George Lisciandro.

Considering today in late March its 22 degrees F here in Boston the flap down helps the engine heat up faster to get you hot air in the cabin. In the summer I zip tied it open.

The flap can be unclipped if you need to but it actually functions to stop hot air escaping and going back into the intakes.

Do aftermarket intakes have an open center duct?

Good info u two........ totally makes sense now

I see intakes like Gruppe M seem to have eliminated that flapper altogether too right???

Anyone here has an aftermarket intake that replaces this center part with a permanent OPEN duct here?

Gruppe M intake still retains a flap mechanism

The Gruppe M RAM intake for W205 C63 still have a flapper.

Solved

Thanks to our German friends over at the motor-talk.de forums who have explained it. It serves an important purpose and prevents hot air from escaping the center duct and back into the intake snorkels on the sides.

You can test it yourself after running the car hard, the cooling fan activates and pull over, open the hood and whilst the fan is running, if you open the flap with your hand, you'll feel the hot air being blown out of the center duct.

When the flap is closed, no hot air escapes the engine bay and back into your intakes.
