Talking 20" wheels / tires questions - 2019 C63 Estate

Hi all, first time poster and first time AMG owner - thanks for having me!

I recently purchased a 20k miles second hand W205 C63 Estate in beautiful condition, and absolutely love this car. I have some questions about the wheels though....

It came with non-standard 20" rims (I believe they only come with 18 or 19 from the factory?). After 5k miles, the front left started slowly losing pressure. Upon taking it for a replacement tire, the garage showed me that both front tires are heavily worn/split on the inside corners, that this indicates that the wheels needed re-aligning. Also that the front left wheel was cracked (likely due to running over a pothole on our rubbish roads). I've had this crack welded up, but whilst doing the welding a second mechanic commented that in his opinion the wheels themselves are poor quality aftermarkets and consequently I am likely to have more of these problems in future. He recommended getting a better quality set of wheels (if I could afford it), and/or at least moving to 40mm thick tires (currently 30 front & back) to increase protection.

Does anyone have any comments on any of this? Should I be looking at a new set of wheels? I've looked up genuine Mercedes sets which look like they cost upwards of £4-5k including tires!

Should I just get a set of thicker tires, pay for a re-alignment and try to be more careful around potholes?! If so, can I run 40mm tires on 20" rims? Should I spec the same thickness front and back?

Many thanks in advance for any support or advice!

Good quality 20" rims aren't easy to bend or crack unless your car fell into a trench sized hole, I recommend you to get better quality rims and new tires.
You can do some research on the width and offsets that are suitable for this car and try to get a set of used high quality (usually forged) aftermarket or oem wheels for 2-3k.
Also, the height of the tire (30) is a percentage, not an actual height in mm. For example if it's 265/30/20, the height of the tire sidewall is 30% of 265mm.

Ah ok, thanks. So I've currently got 245/30ZR20 - does this mean 30% of 245? Is there any way to find out whether, for example, a 245/40ZR20 tire would fit the car?

Yep, the height of your tire is 30% of 245. I know that a 245/40ZR20 will most likely not work but 245/35R20 should work.
However, Mercedes setup the car to have the rear tire be at least as tall as the front tire. If you are changing to 245/35R20 front, you should at least use a 275/30R20 or 265/35R20 rear (a little tall, not sure if it fits ).
