Pre vs Facelift traction

Hi guys

For those who have tested both, is there a big difference on traction between pre and facelift?

Thanks

Yes there is. AMG made changes to the chassis with updated suspension and rear differential. The FL C63 (non S) now also has the electronic locking differential, whereas before it had a mechanical LSD. The e-diff reacts much faster, can fully lock and can proactively lock for example when doing Race Start and continuously calculates the optimal locking ratio based on driver inputs and available traction.

The FL S in addition has the 9-stage traction control which manages traction much much better than the traditional TC in the PFL and the non-S. I had the pleasure of attending a winter driving event with AMG last month, and experienced the C63S in the snow. You can literally take off with WOT in the snow by setting the TC accordingly and let it manage the engine torque so the car takes off w/o drama. It's no longer the kind of traction control that panics, applies the brakes and cuts power. It actually helps you getting off the ground by managing the wheel spin via the e-diff and engine torque management.

We didn't have a lot of snow (mild winter in Europe), but they managed to put together a snow/ice drift circle, and it really showed how capable the FL is even on slippery surfaces by playing with the traction control. When you turn off ESP in the PFL you have nothing that helps you with traction and if you leave it on, TC might just cut the power to the point where you are simply stuck. That's not the case with the FL C63S. With ESP off you still have TC, but as said you can regulate it between fully on or fully off depending on how much help you want.

Here's me drifting, no studs BTW.

Big difference? Depends on how/where you drive, but in most cases, no. I've driven both (S Coupes) and haven't noticed any significant difference (on dry roads roads at least).

Yes, 255/285 PS4S. You do need temperature in summer performance tires to have grip. At the moment with temps in the 40s and 50s I don't have all that much grip. But during the summer with tire temps getting into the 100s and 150s+ on a canyon run, there's tons of grip.

Nope, the PSS is worse. It's an older tire. The PS4S has better dry and wet traction and also handles noticeably better and improves ride comfort. When I still had the PSS I could not hook at all in the low temps.

If you need better low temp traction you have to go all-season or winter tires. Performance tires need warm temperatures. The stickier the compound the more heat they need before they actually have increased grip. Tires like the Cup 2 need to be hot first before they outperform the PS4S, but on the other hand you don't wanna drive the Cup 2 in the cold and wet.
