C63 diff
If you've had the car into MB and they have said the diff is broken then I'd be inclined to see if you can get a second opinion - the dealerships are all too keen on selling you a £4.5k part plus labour to fit it when quite often things can be repaired....

So the issue with getting a used one is that you don't know how worn it already is. I suppose if you can get one from a wrecked car with significantly less miles than yours, chances are it has a good amount of life left to it, but you don't know how the car had been driven. For all you know that used diff could be close to worn out as well.

At what mileage would you expect the electronic diff to get worn out? Would it just be the clutch pack you replace then or the entire thing?
Do you know what the symptoms would be of a worn out diff? Thanks

I haven't really seen any data on the typical lifetime of these diffs. Don't really read of many having to replace them unless they are malfunctioning. In theory if you can find somebody willing to rebuild the e-diff, then yes, essentially you only have to replace the clutch pack. Mechanical LSDs can also be rebuilt, but dealerships likely will just wanna replace them and not rebuild them.
The symptoms of a worn locking differential is that it will always act as an open differential, so you'll get one wheel spin and traction problems, because the diff isn't locking and sending torque to the wheel with traction.
