Almost everyone who loves cars as much as we do, are always looking to enhance their ride. I do it. Always have. My first ride was a 54 Ford Fairlane. Three on the column. Took off the big air cleaner and screwed on a little chrome cap over the 2-bbl carb for the sound. I get it. At 74? Still doin’ it. You like it? That’s all that matters.

1000% couldn’t agree more. I have a modding addiction. Every car I own is modded in way or another. I just cant help it haha
FWIW, they sell caps like these for other brands. Aftermarket junk. Tell me: how many people will see your “ custom” gas cap? How many of those will be impressed? Or, is just owning the car not enough for your ego?
Yeah Bruce is right that gas cap is rubbish and no ones going to ever see it any way.
Update: solved the gas cap light, rough idle after filling gas and check engine light.
I stopped by the dealer to get a new purge valve. replaced the purge valve and inspected the old one. It was very dirty on the inside of the tube, some corrosion, and what look like sand or dust. Engine a lot more responsive, power feels like before when I first got pure 900 turbos. Idle smooth asf. Ticking sound is completely gone. No more loose gas cap light.

Mate that was a bit of a worry. Glad to hear it's made your car better now. Just for others who are having the same issue, it's these little things you replaced eh?

Yep those are the purge valve. Replacing that also made the loud ticking noise go away. Engine sound like when I first took delivery.
Would I get a loose gas cap sign before the purge valve damage occurs/begins?
here’s the following symptoms I experienced
1. Purge valve started getting loud a few thousand miles back (ticking noise on driver side for right hand drive cars)
2. Loose gas cap light randomly coming on and off
3. After a week or 2. Car would start rough, misfiring plus check engine light. that along with surging rpm on idle and drive
some other things i’ve noticed is the power. it feels like I lost 200hp from my pure 900

The part number I posted above is the correct one you got aye?
I ordered mine from a dealer on eBay, and was frightened to face that same issues you guys describe but fortunately and I hope I'm not jinxing it but I didn't had any problems with it !
I think that those were manufactured while a ago for the edition 1 and they are sitting in warehouses since then, so they are few years old and depends on the place and the climate where
they were sitting the gasket might been affected... that's just an assumption I'm making I'm not professional in any mean.
I would try and order another one from somewhere else just make sure you can return it and the next one will get probably will be good. gl !

I also have zero issues so far with the G55 cap so far.
I’m not sure I’d necessarily agree that storing these caps in a parts warehouse is going to degrade the seal enough to cause this issue - after all, has caps are installed on cars for years. I’ve only just replaced the gasket on a 20 year old BMW cap.
Unfortunately I don’t have my stock cap to compare to the G55 AMG one - has anyone taken any measurements or even do a side by side to compare the depth of the seals etc?

I don’t have any exact measurements. But the interesting thing I noticed was that the stock cap had no internal conical nozzle that the 55 cap has. Instead the stock cap is flat on the inside. Also the 55 cap says “vented” which the stock one doesn’t (or maybe it does and I didn’t notice it)…so idk what to think of that.
Always wondered why they look different.
Edition 55 inside with a conical nozzle
I got my caps from ECS tuning. Haven’t driven long enough or had my cars dirty/washed enough to notice a difference yet.
is it hard to replace by yourself? one of the guys told me to replace it a while ago
Hey brother it's a bit of a hassle to remove one of the hoses that don't "unplug". You need to loosen it with needle nose pliers and wd40. And remove one intake snorkel but that's all.
If you get stuck let me know i'll walk you through it 👍
lol jimmy why bother .... these dudes cant even care to reply & give u a thanks let alone turn a wrench
who cares, people like jimmy are making forums like this better and keeping it alive for those of us that love amg and for not having to take it to the stearlership and go through all that hassle. I'm thankful for all the helpful enthusiasts on here that are contributing
