new amg gas cap, rough idle plus flashing check engine light and loose gas cap messag
question for everyone here. So I purchased a new amg gas cap a few weeks ago, everything is fine until last week when I started getting loose gas cap messages. Check the gas cap and everything is tight as can be. It went and go. Today I got it again while driving to a gas station to fill up. After filling up the car idle very rough, I can feel it shaking, start up sound very quite too, then a flashing check engine light came on. Turn the car on and off multiple times, but to no avail. I decided to just put it in drive & at that moment the rough idle stop and everything went back to normal. Went home and change back into the old gas cap. Can a faulty gas cap cause all of this ^^. Never happened to me before, weird
so how would a bad gas cap cause flashing check engine light along with really rough idle like the car is misfiring? a loose gas cap on my other cars, I would just get a warning on the dash but nothing crazy like this

Yes, a loose gas cap can lead to misfires, rough idle etc. because in short, the fuel system can't produce the necessary injection pressure if there's a loss in the system. Below is a link with more detail on the subject. Not recommended to keep driving around with a loose or leaking gas cap. Initially it might be ok and all you get is a solid CEL or the gas cap warning, but over time this can cause damage.

Guys, I put back on the old gas cap but still get loose gas cap warning light. So every time I get that message, if I fill up gas right away when I get the message the car would shake and flashing check engine light. It doesn't stay on for more than 1 minute. ordered a new gas cap but I'm not sure if that's the problem. Could this be gas cap sensor going bad ? or something else

Since I don't know your specific situation, I would like to ask a few questions, please:
-What gas are you using and what grade, i.e., Shell 93...
-Always the same place or whatever is handy?
-Did this begin only AFTER you first used the cool cap?
FWIW, this happened to me shorty after I first bought it. Scared the crap out of me. Pulled over. Restarted the engine. Never happened again. I have read here that it happens with some frequency to a few of us. If it were me, I'd not call, but swing by the Benz dealership and crash the party and find your SA. If you don't have one, find one and make a friend you might need for something really serious in the future. BOND. Ask for some eyes-on-eyes help. It's harder to ignore people when you're nose-to-nose than over a phone line.

3. Yes this whole thing started when I replaced it with the cool amg cap
4. The loose gas cap warning doesn't stay on, it just comes and go. Filling gas immediately after the warning the car would have flashing check engine light and shaking. But if there's no loose gas cap message at the time then the car act 100% normal starting it up after filling gas.
once I get my new gas cabin a few days and if it still happening then mostly likely I'll drop it off my trusted indy shop

Well, there isn't a gas cap sensor per se. There are pressure sensors throughout the fuel system that ensure the correct pressure is present in the system and to detect leaks. There's one in the tank and a leak could potentially be elsewhere, but the gas cap is usually the most obvious culprit. First thing to do is to hook up a code reader and see what error codes are being logged. That might give you more information about where it thinks there's a leak. There are specific trouble codes for fuel system leaks.

Some blokes payed $200 for one haha I'm putting my old cap back on. This one looks good but annoying as it doesn't rest on the fuel door when filling. That and my car stutters when I start it and idles funny ever since I fitted it

how's to the old cap doing? I put the old one in and still the same thing
^^ this happens after every time I refuel the car and start it up, the surges are more noticeable when I put it in drive. I have to turn the car off for a few minutes then turn it back on then everything is back to normal, no surges, no rough idle, no check engine light. Will report back once I take it to an indy shop
FWIW, they sell caps like these for other brands. Aftermarket junk. Tell me: how many people will see your “ custom” gas cap? How many of those will be impressed? Or, is just owning the car not enough for your ego?

Im not an ego maniac. Its not an ego thing. I just like the way it look & don’t care about who see it or not. Just like this c63. It’s an emotional buy. I love the sound, the looks & how it drives. Could careless about what anyone else thinks.
