Installing Downpipes this week- o2 Spacer?

Getting ModalWorks catted Downpipes installed this week, and after plenty of investigating, I can't find a clear answer if o2 spacers are needed on Catted Downpipes?

Just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly as I would like to avoid a CEL, lmao.

Appreciate any feedback. Gracias!

Your tuner can wipe the CEL for the o2. I have catless DPs so I wouldn’t sweat the CEL.

That's what I can't really find- if they are catted, do you really need Spacers?

The car will still fail emissions in any state that checks for o2 readiness.

If the catted DP's come with an extended secondary o2 bung then I dont see a CEL popping up. Its the secondary o2 sensor that triggers the CEL.

Thinking about doing these soon also, but with a tune. Did your car throw a cel light?

If you are getting a tune then no need to worry about CEL. DP without tune will 100% throw a CEL and DP with O2 spacers is honestly a gamble, some people still get them some don't

Mercedes ECUs are too smart for 02 spacers; hell, my 2005 C55 threw codes with upgraded DPs. I had to get it tuned out by the manufacturer (Kleemann).

If the tuner turns offs the light, doesn't it still fail plug in emissions? That's my concern.

If your state or county checks for O2 readiness, your car will still fail.

Makes sense. Not even going to mess with getting Spacers. Just going to ride out the CEL.

Big daddies garage Mini cat spacer is the only O2 spacer that would work. I almost went with the modalworks/o2 spacer combo but I ended up getting the 200cell HJS catted redstar pipes. No spacers needed and no CEL! Expensive but I didn't want to mess with spacers or a tune. Very quality pipes.

Any idea how much power your car picked up with these?

hey Ali i was wondering how long you have had those redstar 200 cell downpipes on? Am looking to get a set for myself as well but worried about CEL issues.

I have ModalWorks 200cel downpipes and used the ProSport MiniCats in the secondary O2 position ... No Check Engine light and no ECU programming necessary.

I spoke too soon... Been getting CEL for delayed / slow response from downstream 02. EuroCharged told me to take out the minicats and just use the 90 adapters and some "defoulers" / extenders. Tried that and the CEL took longer to come on, but same codes about delayed / slowed response. EuroCharged suggested running the downstream 02 with no spacer or 90 degree adapter at all... I haven't tried that yet ... Called ModalWorks and they said that (using no spacer at all) would almost definitely throw a code. ModalWorks also said that they have heard good things about the big daddies garage spacers... And I've seen a few people on the MB forums recommend them... So I think I might give them a try before I just run the O2's directly in the OEM position.

Update. I decided to run just the straight defoulers and the O2's in the factory position (no 90 degree adapter). It's tight on the driver side and the O2 touches the hose that comes out of the firewall, but it fits. Passenger side fits with no issues. Because the MB ECU seems very sensitive to flow across the secondary O2's I did drill out the bottom of the defouler a little. Not to 1/2" like
for the shorter defoulers though... BTW... Using the short defoulers, 1/2" is still too small for the secondary MB O2's and the side ports of the O2 would be completely blocked / sealed... So I didn't even try that route. Inside the longer defoulers (link below) there is a step smaller diameter and then a further step down where the hole in the end is. I just matched the size / diameter of first step, so that the hole in the end is slightly bigger. I've driven the car a few times now and maybe 75 miles or so and no CEL so far. I'm hoping this is the sweet spot. FWIW, I used this exact set up on a tuned supercharged Mustang and it worked great for 15 years or so. With that car, the only time I'd see a CEL is mountain driving above about 9000' elevation or so.

The only other comment I have on this topic is that if you use 90 degree adapters like the Bad Daddies Garage, or other brands, you are forced to have to run the O2's oriented downwards. In other words, the sensor portion is pointing toward the hood and the wires are pointing to the ground. But O2 Sensors are supposed to have a slight downward orientation wherever they are in the exhaust system so that any condensation doesn't accumulate on the sensor itself. Condensation is always going to happen in an exhaust when hot air is blown across cooler pipes so you can't avoid it. This makes me wonder if the orientation of the O2's when using a 90 degree adapter is leading to some condensation accumulating on the sensor and thus the slow / delayed response codes.

From Holley's website:

These are the defoulers I'm trying now:
Straight defoulers

I hope this helps others.
