Morning Albertans

Hey guys,

New here -- just sold my Porsche 997 C2S last night and I am considering the switch to a '12-13 C63 AMG sedan...

My question is: with good winter tires can I commute to work with this thing 95% of the time? I know this question has been asked before, I have read some comments but would like more opinions from locals.

I have a Toyota Tundra that I can drive on blizzard days but I just want to make sure the C63 isn't a garage queen like my 911 was.

Any input is much appreciated.

I'm not a local but have driven both in the winter, so for what it's worth - unless you decided against driving the C2S in the snow solely because of the low ground clearance, the C63 probably isn't the best choice either as it can be a handful. Driving uphill on snow-covered roads between other / parked cars and snow banks is not exactly without challenges. All other things being equal, I found that the 996 was actually better off-the-line because of the extra weight over the rear, plus the lower torque made it easier to get it going without spinning the wheels. I now drive my C63 year-round, but I'm in Toronto and the streets here are salted and usually cleared relatively quickly.

Having said that, the C63 is not really that different from any other RWD vehicle. With a set of decent snows and a gentle right foot, it will do OK 95% of the time - but then again, so would the 996. If you're looking for something "noticeably better" than the C2S though, the C63 is IMHO not the right car.

Thanks for the reply.

To clarify -- I didn't sell the 997 to find a "winter vehicle" -- I just wanted something with 4 doors and a different feeling. My 997 wasn't winter friendly because it was so low.

I picked up a '12 C63 AMG today With studded Hakka's mounted...

I do recall the 996 doing snow plow duty whenever we got more than 2-3 inches, so if that was indeed your concern you're not going to have any issues with the C63. With studded tires, the thing should handle like it's on rails. Congrats and enjoy the car!

Your C63 will do great with Studded Hakkas. 95% of the time I would say you will be good in the winter. If it really snows hard or it is really rutted outside your house take your Tundra.

I commute with mine to work and the only main problem is getting outside of my cul de sac lol

lol -- I am thinking the same, worst case: take my truck.

Its funny, when I began this search I wanted something cheaper on fuel than my 5.7L Tundra and with AWD -- I end up buying a 6.2L with RWD.

My car wouldn't even make it up my driveway with a skiff of snow...it had summer tires though....

That would explain that.
