took a ride in the new M5 last night
They re-paved this road last year and it's better than Angeles Crest Hwy (no bikes, cops, or traffic). The M5 was fast for a 4200 pound car, but it didn't feel that much faster than my SLK32. I was, however, impressed by the handling and with the active seats. When I first read about these seats, I thought "what a gimmick". But on the twisties, they really worked! I was also impressed by the heads up display which displayed the tach and the gear I was in. The SMG didn't shift as fast as I thought it would, either -- even in M mode (I didn't try "launch control", though). It was amusing the way it blipped the throttle every time I downshifted when approaching a turn. It made me look like a better driver than I am... and I didn't even have to heel and toe it. And with the shift paddles, it was kind of like playing a video game. The brakes were pretty good as well. But the bottom line is; for a 5 passenger car weighing that much, it was amazing. Especially the handling
Ok, seriously though, Steve Dinan will be probably one of the first to have something for the new M5. Karl at Active Autowerkes in FL is most likely also working on a setup.
