what is problematic is that it is presumed that the previous installations were
okay. unless one is there with volt meter in hand to triple check everything,
we'll never really be able to troubleshoot this via Internet conclusively other
than to suggest 'did you....<fill in the blank>...?'

another idea (though not a bright one) is not to reuse any of the previous
crimp/splice connections. in my 99 E320, i have door storage bin...with a
poor excuse for a puddle light at the base of the bin. no doubt the hot lead
is wired to door pin and snakes through the tunnel in the door hinge. so
chances are high that you could access this beneath the kick panel. wonder
if you can tap into the switched hot lead there?

did you happen to ask Jerry if anyone else has reported premature failures?

he said he has never, never had to replace them three times...he was just as shocked as i was....what kills me is that through all this the passenger side keeps lighting up day in and day out...how could that be...better connections on the passenger side? maybe i can wire the driver side to different place other than the door pin?
