You guys seen this yet???
Knowing that the time will come soon, and knowing that I will NOT be buying the new CL because it looks like a cross between a Solara, a 645, and an Acura, I started to look at what's out there and saw this:

This may be one more piece of evidence that MBZ is slipping and that the Japanese are making a strong move...look how tight that interior looks...I'll bet no rattles, creaks, or wind noise inside that cabin.
Yes, the CL has a lot of technology built into it and I know the S550 has the "night vision screen" but I thought this was pretty cool.
What do you guys think?

2001 Lorinser Edition CL600 (SOLD)
It is common for people to trash the new body style as it replaces the old until you start seeing them on the road and tricked out. Then, suddenly the W215 will start looking like an out-of-style box, just like the body styles before them all do now. Unfortunate, but that's the life and death cycle that happens to them all at this time!

CLFREAK:
You are right; most of the time.
However, there are some cars that come along that don't become an "out-of-style box" even after 10-20 years of age. These vehicles are called "timeless."
Some of these vehicles may sound familiar to many and there are more:
the 300 gullwing;
Cobra
F 355
69 GTO
MBZ 215
P.S.-I won't be changing my mind when I see the "new" Solara on the streets.

well, i don't think the CL's should be bunched with those design icons...
but i do agree that its looks will endure a lot longer than the actual car itself. i mean gullwing.. ? let's not get carried away. well anyway, the weird thing is, i still really love the older body style..lots of brawn, very macho looking. i really would have bought one if they were more reliable with 200,000mile warranty. i know, i know. it was a pipe dream and i am awake now

i love the current cl and will keep it for another couple years..i dont care if it becomes outdated or whatever..
i still see the pre 2007 s class around and it still looks powerful out there...im part of the "its still a mercedes and its still an awesome car" group...just like people who drive older bmws or porsches and still loving them..
the w215 has curves so it is not going to look as dated or boxy to me...for instance...i had a r129...and those are literally boxy...they have a square design...then if you look at the r230 shape it is completely deifferent...

BlownV8:
I agree, the R230 is absolutely beautiful and is definately on the list.
The whole point of my thread was not focused so much on the future of the debauchery that is the new cl, rather the future of Mercedes as a whole when it comes to reliability coupled with the technology. I love the beauty of many of their vehicles, I enjoy the prestige factor that automatically comes with the purchase, but I have to wonder "Is it kind of a facade?" MBZ fell short of my expectations when it came to the reliabilty/fit and finish department. (at least with my particular vehicle.)
What do you guys think about the apparent slippage on quaility and possible surpassing by other auto makers?
CLFREAK: I know what you are saying about people hating on "the new" just because it's "the new"...
THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I have said over and over that; in my opinion, MBZ's latest styling trends with the new CL and 550 are not as distinctive as the previous. They are more homogenized now with the styling following the same trends and cues as the other auto makers have already had out on the market. -Just my opinion.

i agree with you that as far as expectations of reliabilty/fit and finish on our CL's (actually any german car experience that i've had, although not that bad compared to some others), i cannot give it accolades. BUT, reliability, fit, and finish can only be described as my HOPE and not my EXPECTATION unfortunately. there are many other attributes that inspired me to buy this car and it wasn't because it was going to be practical or 'perfect' in a reliability sense. if i wanted that i would've bought a lexus hands down. but until toyota and MB or toyota and BMW team-up to make the ultimate car, we're just stuck with having to choose between the two

Very well said and I agree. I have owned 2 Lexus vehicles in the past and their reliability just can not be touched. However there were a few squeaks and rattles here and there

And that is just a gimmick - 90% of drivers know how to park...so this is more like a PLUS when you have a passenger that u get to say "hey, wanna see something incredible???"
Otherwise, youll rarely use it urself......
