CL500 Dashboard lighting

Hope someone has some ideas that may help me along. My dashboard lighting in my CL500 has completely gone out. Other functions have stopped as well e.g. M/F steering wheel, indicator noise (indicator still working), high beam (flash works). I can not access the dash computer at all. The only light that initially comes on is the SRS and goes out as normal after the car is started. Funny enough, it has also locked the boot completely. Can not use the smart card or IR remote to open it.

I am in the Dominican Republic and as you can imagine, the technical skills / parts availability are something left to be desired.

Any suggestions? Is this a common problem?

There is a recall on W215 models for the instrument dashboard. I had mine replaced by the dealer.

The recall only applies to certain CL's, based on the cars VIN. Call 1-800-for-merc and they will advise when on not it is being recalled. In any event, the warranty is extended to 10 years from, I guess, production date.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like a simple DIY replacement, if I can get hold of the parts. The car was orginally imported in from Germany.

Does anyone have a first hand experience of this actually happening to them and did the faults indicated below occur:

- Boot release failure
- Instrument cluster lights failure
- High beam setting failure (although HB works if you flash)
- M/F steering wheel failure (only controls for Radio/Vol etc..)
- PDC failure
- Illumination failure around other centre controls.

Just want to check I am not missing a simple breaker 'fix' or something like that. In addition, I have no idea where the fuse charts are on the vehicle. I read in the forum, that they maybe located in the spare wheel in the boot, which I can no longer open....

Any suggestions on a fuse chart?

Happy Ending...sort of...

Well, believe it or not. Out of the 6 MB CL500's in the DR, one of them had an accident about a month ago. So I ended up purchasing a Instrument panel for $US588 installed at a 'specialist'.

Hard to believe that the instrument cluster affected so many other parts of the car including high beam, boot release and PDC, which are all working again.

On the sad side...I do not know if this fix is one of the 'problem units', as the specialist placed it in the vehicle and did not make a note of the part number. The part has a 45 day guarantee....

MB in the DR will not honour the warranty from Germany. If anyone is aware of a company (perf. USA) that can re-engineer my old display it would be appreciated.

A head-up on the fuse chart would be appreciated for future ref. (not in the boot).

Thanks to all those that replied to my thread. Much appreciated!

partial fix

This happened to me yesterday. Achieved partial fix by replacing fuse. Now everything works except backlight on instrument cluster. The fuse is situated in the fuse box in the engine compartment on the right hand side of the car looking towards the rear. The fuse is about halfway along the box (I think it is fuse 22 or 23. Hope this helps.
