2003 CL55 AMG
Last I had heard, Ronald from the Euro AMG owners club, said it was scraped and would not be produced.

That's too bad. Would have been nice to see a CL as a convertible (though there are aftermarket places that change them) and especially a hardtop version.

Your probably thinking of the CLE. A 4 door version of the new CLK. See http://www.mbspy.com/c219.htm for more info.

Thumbs down

It's nice that there are aftermarket places to turn the CL-Coupe into a convertible. Although, what's going to compete against the BMW 6-series coupe AND convertible. Mercedes-Benz needs to produce a factory built CL convertible or cariolet they would call it so there is biased competition for both manufacturer's. Although MB just might have something else up their sleeve that will jump out at us and BMW. Just my 2 cents!

People who are "in the know" will laugh their *** off when they see that cloth top on a CL. This may have worked on the W140 coupe, but with the introduction of the 2003 hardtop SL, that conversion screams "cheesy". Besides, it sure is a tacky way to alter a $100K car.

About a Year ago, there was an article in DUBS about R.Kelly's
Custom built CL600 Covertable. It looked OK but the cloth top and boot cover was awful.

your right, but the CL is a 4 seat coupe so it would have to have a bigger hard top which will then take up the whole trunk space unless redesign the rear.
btw the CLE is a 4 door coupe of the CL. which is better b/c the CL is a higher Class then the CLK.

Are you talking about the one that was in one of his videos? I think it was called "did you ever think". It was silver with black interior. If it is, then that car has been shown in several mags for sale.

A CL with the cloth top would look cheesy but ponder this, do you think someone who saws the roof of a 100k car uses it as his primary transportation? do you think R kelly checks the weather and says 'oh think it'll rain, too bad i'll have to put the top on my CL up , coz im not interested in drivin any of the other cars in my two floor garage' please people , these things are made as exclusive toys, people who pay to make their cars look uglier really dont care what it looks like with the top up, wind noise @ highway cruisin speeds or any loss of structural rigidity for that matter....my 2 cents

i like it how they look already, i dont think they should chop the top. I love the pillar-less look when the windows are dropped. Very classey look. But it would be cool if they made a convertible option. It would be sweet if they made a hardtop convertible. That would be sharp, i would buy it if i had the cash flow.

Here is a pic of R.Kelly's custom CL 600 convertible.

As you can probably tell it has had alot more done to it than the drop top conversion.

Here is a short article about it:
